Here in Oz if you have a problem with a remote that is obsolete you can take it to a local little kiosk in most shopping malls and get a replacement. The businesses here are Mr

Minit. They have the ability to read the frequency of any remote and give a multi system replacement. These kiosks also do key cutting and engraving.

The remotes are all made in China or Korea nowadays but are no different in opration to the originals.

It obviously requires you to take the working remote with you for them to check what you need.

Might be a better option.

Paul,

Ford offered and still does, add-on security systems through the Ford Parts departments. These are Ford authorized and can be bought from the Parts Department at Ford dealers. The systems are piggy-backed on to whatever may have been originally built with the vehicle. They are built for Ford by outside authorized suppliers. Parts Departments generally didn't stock them and had to be ordered. I would take the Instruction/Installation and Owner's Manual to a Ford Parts Department and see if you can determine if that particular kit is still being sold by Ford. After 18 years I doubt it but worth a try. Also, look for any contact information included in the literature you have.

No,this one is a Ford system. There is an information and instruction supplement in the owners manual that is a Ford publication. It was shown in the list of options as a dealer installed item at the time. It has worked perfectly for 18 years, and in fact, still is OK.The only problem is that one of the remotes has gone bad and I'd like to see if they can get a replacement for me.

Those "add-on" security systems have become a huge profit opportunity for the new car dealers. When I bought my truck from a local dodge dealer - it had a "supplemental" anti-theft system that they had allegedly added to prevent losing vehicles from the lot. Apparently a big problem around these parts due to our proximity to the border I suppose. At closing of the deal - they tried to slip in a $450 fee for the supplemental system (size of a pack of cigarettes) - and I told them to either remove it or we were done talking, so.....they removed it (ugly side-cutter sort of operation that tells me it can't actually work if you know what to cut). One of our employees had the same "add-on" system - installed by the same dealer but over on the Ford side of the lot. He actually paid for it and it has shut his oufit down on several occasions, locked him out - cost towing charges, etc. - all at his expense as the system acts up and interferes with the factory wiring of the truck. There is apparently no warranty on the anti-theft system, it is a pure profit enterprise for the dealer.

I haven't had the same sort of troubles with my Dodge - but the little blue "clips" that they used to "cut" the additional system into the control wiring - are still in there, and as far as I can tell are eventually going to be a breakage risk for the injured OEM vehicle wiring and circuitry.

So - do you suppose the DOT will get in the middle of this when one of our vehicles - with the little add on package , or the disabled clips - causes a vehicle to flat out die at just the wrong moment and take of few of us with it?????

May be a non Ford dealer installed item. In that case only the selling dealer would fix it.

Thanks Mark and Ivan..........I'll give them a call.We bought a new Explorer there a few years ago and had them install a factory dealer installed security system in it that we now have a problem with. Our Ford dealer here says that Ford never offered that system, even though I have the manual that came with it,which is obviously a Ford book.So I thought I'd see if I can get any information from the dealer where we bought the Explorer.

Thanks again!

I recognize the name, since it on my side of town, but a google search does not turn up a site for them... so they may be out of business...
