Someone suggested to another over on the HAMB that he replace his Y with an sbc, the responses rolled in. This was one that caught my eye.
Personally, I can't imagine subbing any SBC for a 'Y'.
1958, I had a '56 Ford ragtop (yeah, 3600 lbs.!) with a fresh Factory Rebuilt 292.
I took it to the drags, embarrassed myself, then back to the shop to look things over.
My boss, Red Mayfield, went through the distributor, and at 32* full advance, massaged the Teapot carb.
Cam was next, and cam timing...lotsa tricks, but still 'stock'.
Ford ran 88 MPH, mid to high 14 seconds...(this was 1958)

I was on a budget, but sponsored by my employer: Mayfield's Garage, in Santa Clara.
Drastic things were next: a '40 over 50%' beefed Borg & Beck pressure plate, heavy truck flywheel, (3600 lbs. convertible, remember? It was Mom's car, so I couldn't put it on a 'diet'; besides, they weighed the 'gassers', and also the stockers that were 'suspect'. I was always 'suspect')
Next thing was the pistons and a concentrated study of valve timing. (this was a car that had to be kept running; NO blueprinting or decking of all surfaces, flow benching, or anything serious)
I removed all 8 pistons, examined them, polished them, and installed them 180 degrees from their position on the rods, taking advantage of the wrist pin offset (in the negative for silent running) Juggled cam timing, when I drove it I could feel the difference...(WOW!)
Fremont drags Sunday was exhiliarating (for me, not the Chevys) First run I netted 92 MPH, in 14.58...next run same, but E.T. suffered a little (14.65)
I was eating Chevies like there was no tomorrow.
Then I got protested. ($50) "You got it?" The $50 was the question. I had it...
I countered with, "You'd better have gaskets..." they tore my 292 down, measured everything. Found nothing. Chevy guy paid. The pit guy ('official') was a Ford hater, and told me: "We'll tear you down 'til we find it, yer cheatin' and we know it..." blah, blah, blah.
I continued beating Chevies and Pontiacs 'til I was afraid they'd wear the bolts out tearin' down that Y block!
This was prior to the new "Bracket Racing".
I was also racing 4 nights a week on the street...San Jose was always good for $10 a gear.
Lost one night when I opened up my T-86 Heavy Duty gearbox with a sloppy shift to 2nd. Box opened up like the bomb bay on a B29...Cluster bounced up, hit the floorboard and scared the daylights outa me. Thought I'd run over that Chevy...
Guy I was racin' was a cool head, wouldn't take my money; drove me to a friend's house to get a chain; TOWED me home with his hopped-up '55 Chevy Tudor Post!
Chevy guys were O.K.
Thinking back on it now...I wonder how many of his Chevy buds' houses he towed me past.
That would be Ultimate! (for him)

Is there really any merit to this? It's the 2nd time I've heard it in the past 2 weeks, from completely different sources.

Tim,

In my last year of high school I bought a 57 Pontiac. Three speed stick (column ) w/ a 2 bbl. We replaced the 2bbl with a 4bbl and installed duals. I was taught how to fiddle with the timing so we advanced the distributor. Thought I had a rocket ! One of my girl friends had been given a 55 Crown Victoria as a Graduation present. 272, Fordo, and Smithies to go with the Continental Kit. I never realized that it started in second gear. Fabulous sound, very little actual acceleration. I had gotten a bad impression of Y blocks in general from that car and the typical chatter in High school about how great the Scrubs were. Living in Ohio, everybody ran one in Altered or Gas. that's about all you ever saw.

Long story short, I was bragging up the Chieftain on evening at the local drive in when a black '56 Vicky pulled in. I sort of knew the guy, but not really. He was "older" probably mid 20's ( like to be older like that again). One thing led to another and I challanged the vick to a drag race. We had a brand new 4 lane road that hadn't been opened up yet, no cops, no traffic. Went there, with about 30 "followers" lined up and I got my head handed to me!w00t That Ford put about 25 car lengths on me in a quarter mile!! Turned out to be a dual quad factory kit on a 312 T-85 OD. I gained a new respect for Y blocks that night. Took me a month to pay the 100 bucks off to him. We remained good friends for several years, then he went to 'Nam in 68. Never came back.

Charlie, The theory is the reduced side thrust helps. The difference does not seem to be all that much. I can tell you everyone did it in the stock and SS classes back in "the Day." I doubt if the actual diiference was more than 1 or 2%. You have to have a symetrical dome or flat topped piston of course.

I think he lurks here now and then.

Charlie, although I have never tried it the Chrysler guys swear that it will give 15 hp on the top end in a 440.  doesn't seem like much for one of those engines but every bit counts. Wink

Installing pistons 180 degrees is very common practice in Small Block Ford World. Sherman is one of those guys...

The piston pinholes are offset (note the difference between dimensions A and B). Sherman says installing the piston “backward” with the notch facing toward the rear as shown is worth 15-30 hp, albeit at the price of increased noise when the engine is cold.
