Well my Thunderbird sweats......Allot!

Quick humorous(?) story from yesterday:

I took my wife to Summits main store in Akron, Ohio so she could see where some of our money has gone. It just happened they were having a Camaro weekend and there were scrubs all over the place. I parked in front of the store and walked the Mrs. through the cavernous inside (a must if you haven't seen it). Upon leaving, while backing out of my parking spot, I confirmed the Y-Block had marked it spot in the parking lot.

Well, my fresh Y block isn't leaking now but I don't have high expectations over the longer term. Between Y block rear main seals and FE's that are known for intake manifold and valve cover leaks, my driveway needs a litter box for each. Ford seemed to get a handle on oil leaks in the late 80's. I spent many days as an apprentice warping my neck vertebrae standing under a shop lift doing warranty rear main seals on late 70's early 80's Ford Crown Vics/Mercury Grand Marquis with double-sump oil pans, one after the other. I have had many later vehicles and none of them ever leaked. Even the two Gen I Lightning F150s that I supercharged and used synthetic oil stayed dry. My best Harley story goes back to 1966 when I was in the USAF in Texas. A good buddy was an Army ex-paratroop instructor who cross-trained into USAF as a small arms trainer. He was from Louisiana and had a full dress 59 Super Glide. On a extra-rowdy nights at the AFB Airmen's Club, we could get three of us GI's on it and haul ass 16 miles down Route 66 to the bars across from the Amarillo stock yards. And there was a local infamous San Francisco HA named Freewheelin' Frank who got his name after coasting his out-of-gas chopper down from the top of Mt. Tamalpias (elevation 2500 Feet.).

Just an FYI to all my non Harley riding friends... the early Harleys were designed, believe it or  not, to leak oil. All Harleys that had dry clutches used a primary drive chain drive that was misted with oil directly from the oil pump by a tube that came in through the back of the inner primary cover. A drain hole at the rear bottom of this cover allowed the excess to drain out. It wasn't until Harley went with a wet clutch and sealed primary (the Evolution Motor I think in the early 80's), that the oil leaks went away. My 2000 Softail FXST has almost 70,000 miles and doesn't leak a drop (except when I change the oil)Tongue

In the same vein, from some of my HD riding friends:

Why doesn't Harley Davidson manufacture computers?

Because they can't figure out how to make them leak oil.
