You're not so old, I think we have all had days like that.  I know I have.  Just good to check everything, even better make sure the parts you have are right before the weekend so when you go to put something together and you find .030 rings in the .060 box the parts stores aren't all closed. Tongue

Tim, glad others have expeirenced this. our parts come by mail or courier but had only been doing 1 engine wouldnt have been such a problem. Tim, must say impressed with your workmanship on the truck and hopefully shall reap the rewards.  i was amazed that you could go to local airstrip to test car, i,m guessing because you fly and well known there? Best regards from all y blockers here!Smile

Bill. sorry to hear about all your troubles. You are correct, it's always a good idea to check everything before installation. I learned that the hard way years ago when I had a particularly difficult starter installation in a boat. Of course new starter was bad, I was much faster the second time.

You do realize that we here in the U.S. send all the parts that don't meet spec down to you guys Smile

Guys, its amazing how a nice uncomplicated day turned into frustration! i have Y block engines everywhere here, one a long  time project that is now moving forward so after trial fit up, gapping the rings and about to lay the crank, i noticed the new .020 main brgs have a delamination in the bearing material, so ordered another set and packed the lot up. Then turning to 272 + .060 boat engine, checked the ring gap, after opening new pkt of rings and there are 2 top rings missing *^&#%! Order another set of rings and go to lay the crank and theres something wrong here! the crank was tagged and also marked as .030" pins, .020 mains but once i measured it up was .040" on mains and .020 pins, wtf! This crank had to be saved as had the dog clutch fitting welded to it on the end. now im on the hunt for .040 main set.

It now appears the machine shop guy put wrong owners tag on crank afterwards, so this job is now covered up. The new brgs just arrived for 1st engine so heres hoping today!

I think its a good lesson to trust nothing and measure everything even if comes from machine shop. My old shop closed after owner died quite a few years back, never had a problem, in 30 yrs, but since trying others, everything is a comprise or the like. Wink
