Later model Y engines transplant into the 1954 U.S. engine bays without issue when used as complete engines and are simply replacing the existing 239 or 256 Y engines.  The external dimensions, motor mounts, and bellhousing patterns are the same for all years of Y-Blocks.  Internally and accessory wise is where the differences are though.  The ’54 engines have their own oil pumps, water pumps, fuel pumps, camshafts, distributors, and timing covers that do not easily interchange with the 1955 and up engines.  You also have to be careful of the pickup and truck engines for the various years which can also exhibit some additional differences in the oil pans and water pumps.

Ted: Thanks. Sorry, possibly I didn't phrase my question clearly. My friend is concerned about interchange with the later engines primarily. OHV 239s are rare here, as Ford cars in Canada in 1954 were still Flat heads. If I understand your reply correctly, interchange of parts with 272s & up in limited then?

Other than a bore difference, the 1954 239 and 256’s will interchange many of their parts such as intake manifold, camshaft, cam bearings, oil pump, fuel pump, water pump, distributor, etc.

A friend is looking at a 54 Merc sedan in decent running shape. However, he asked me if the 54-256's have the same parts interchange problems as the 54 car 239's. I'm not sure? Can someone answer his question for me? Thanks.
