anybody have any 272 pistons they want to part with? just pulled apart what looks to be a freshly rebuilt 272 but it sat around too long and a couple pistons have some serious pits on the top. I have tons of 292 stuff but no spare 272.

There is a company on EBAY that lists them for $300 + a set. I finally gave up and bored my last 272 to 292. 272 pistons are just too hard to find now. Chuck

Ah shucks Chuck, I thought when I saw your reply you were going to say you had some and would deliver them and visit my shop.

I am not in the position to bore this engine, as I say I have several 292's already. I just want to get this one going for a guy who has some old junkers he wants to selll but wants a running engine in them, they are not really worth wasting my 292 stuff on.

Sorry Bill didn't mean to get you excited although that isn't hard to do to a Maineac. Still want to get up and visit someday but time and money don't come together often enough. I hope to make it before Columbus. Chuck

Bill:

If the pits are only in the tops of the pistons, it probably won't hurt anything to run them for your intended use.  If you really think you need other pistons, I probably have some used ones in my stash, and I don't think they are made of gold.

Chuck, the Loring run is shortly before Columbus, would be a good time to head up.

Thanks Hoosier, after looking at these closer, I may just run them. If I can't I may be asking you for a couple.

On another note, I think I found why it was rebuilt and never run, the Oil rings appear to be too large and was binding the rings. on the first piston I cleaned and reinstalled the rings I could not get the rings to compress down flush with the piston so on the first one I took some tin snips and cut one hump off and they fit much better. I am wondering if the set they used was for a 292, maybe the set was mixed up when bought and the engine ended up too tight and thats why it never run. The other funky thing about this set is it has an expander ring in the second groove under that ring along with having a thin ring above the top ring. anybody know what type of set this is.

How far is Loring from you? I was thinking about it if I can convince the "boss" to let me go. I don't think any of our guys are planning to run there this year.  Chuck

Bill:

The thin ring above the top ring is probably a repair for a worn top groove.  I used to do that at NAPA about 30 years ago.  There was a hand operated cutter that would cut the groove wider and square it up, then the spacer was installed above the ring.  I doubt if anyone does this anymore.  I have seen ring sets with the expander under the second ring, can't remember the manufacturer.  Pedrick maybe.
