GREAT article in this months issue of YBM on the Engine Masters Challenge. What alot of work all you guys put into it. Definately something for serious Y-Blockers to aspire to. Congratulations!

Of special interest to me is the electric water pump used on the motor. I assume that this was a "one-off" custom fabrication of the housing, but I would like to know more about it. I think there would be some serious interest if there would be one on the marketBigGrin.

Because I’ve had several requests for a pump like the one on the EMC engine, I’m currently working with a shop on a CNC program to machine the electric water pump housing.  This new housing is based solely on the hand made prototype that was used on the EMC engine.  I expect to have the first CNC machined piece in my hands within the next few weeks for approval.  If that part meets expectations, then the go ahead to finish the remainder of the order will be given.

 

The other part of making this happen is the electric drive and the impeller.  I’m working with another vendor to obtain only the electric drive and impeller assemblies.  Making this happen and getting the pieces needed at an affordable price is proving to be difficult though.  For the EMC engine I used components of a pump for a scrub engine but that meant purchasing a whole boxed ready to run pump which makes the overall assembly much more expensive than it needs to be.

Is the housing machined from solid stock, or are you using a casting?  I'm asssuming solid, so maybe Frank or John can give you some direction for using castings as a starting point, greatly reducing the amount of machining needed.

John.  Short term I’m having housings machined from solid stock simply because that was more expedient in getting some of these in my hands.  Once I have an extra housing to spare, then I’m more than interested in going the casting route as that will undoubtedly lower the cost.

Ted, Certainly. I suspect we could talk Lonnie into building a pattern. I can show him how. It would probably be less expensive than a foundry pattern maker.

We bought this CSR unit for our dragster but I have read that people use those in their daily drivers too. With additional  thermostat kit you get the best out of it cause it controls the waterflow itself by reducing rpm of the pump when the engine is cold and thus saves the battery and alternator too.

So, we have the engine fromt plate bolted and sealed to the timing cover and I welded a pipe to it to feed water inside of the engine. Well, no experience yet how well it works Tongue.
