I read somewhere where your local Harley Davidson store has chrome 5/16-24 acorn nuts.

Ace and other hardware stores have bins of chrome fasteners usually under lock and key. There is a good chance acorn nuts would be there. I have a set of cast winged nuts due any day. It will be interesting to see if they are any good or not. 50% chance. Got them here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230498329031&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT .

Another option for acorns is Fastenal...they have stainless acorns for a couple buck a piece. Search "5/16 24 acorn" if the link doesn't work. http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/detail.ex?sku=70981&ucst=t

Regarding that ebay link above for winged valve cover nuts. They came today. VERY uninspiring. Rough ferrous casting, not tapped, may require threaded bushings, and wont look good at all unless chromed. Anybody want to buy some wing nuts ?

In all fairness, this is the same ebay seller I bought my 2nd batch from. You can't really be surprised with what you got, as his auction description says almost exactly what you seemed to be surprised by: These are raw cast wingnuts. they can be tapped for 5/16 1/4 or 3/8 threads. You will have to chase the holes with a drill for the bigger tap sizes. They can be plated or polish nicely as they are. Designed to be used for calve covers, valley pans, lakester caps. etc. I had mine chromed, because they'll be handled so much...they came out BEAUTIFUL...but overall cost was about $50. The Eelco wing nuts that I have (NOS) don't have the casting flash, are tapped 5/16-18, and cost twice as much... For $2 a piece, they're a good place to start. Eelco is not longer making their wing nuts.

Be careful with the winged valve cover nuts, I have heard of people coming out of the hotel to thier car in the morning and finding their cast valve covers missing.
