There is actually 2 choke clean air tubes on an Autolite 4100. The first one is a short 5/16" OD brass tube which protrudes just below the carb top on the passenger side. This takes clean air from inside the air cleaner. This tube in its original application connected to a rubber hose which connected to a steel line to the passenger side exhaust manifold. To complete the clean air circuit air passed through the exhaust manifold where the air is heated and continues to the return hot air line (which is the other steel tube) that is covered in the white (used to be asbestos) insulator to retain exhaust heat which ends as the 1/4" fitting on the choke thermostat. The idea of the clean air feature is no unfiltered air full of contaminants can be drawn into the choke thermostat. Clean heated air is needed for proper choke operation, as well any contaminants drawn in the choke can stick the little piston or plug the vacuum channel inside the carb.
If you are using the B manifold the hot air line has a round cap with several small holes that act as a filter/screen-er on drivers side. This is the steel line that passes internally though the B manifold to the choke thermostat.
If you are using the B manifold with the Autolite 4100 just slip a blank rubber stopper over the end of the brass tube to stop any unfiltered air entering the engine and connect the choke thermostat to the choke hot air line.

Again, on a Autolite 4100 what does the choke clean air tube do? Is something connected to it? I can't find any illustration of the carb that shows it. Thank.

texasmark1 (4/22/2010) will this carb fit the "A" intake? suppose it would need some kind of spacer...?You’ll need an adapter to bolt that carb to the ‘A’ manifold. There will be some throttle bore mismatch with an adapter but it’s runable.

will this carb fit the "A" intake? suppose it would need some kind of spacer...? from what I've read, this would indeed be the 4 bbl of choice... in fact, my 57 272 had a Motorcraft 2100 on it when I bought it years ago; it appears that the 4100 is more or less a 2100 times 2... any input? thanks,Mark

PF Arcand (4/19/2010) Thanks for the replies. In my haste to ask about the carb, I made an error. There were two invoices in the box & I don't think one applies. I mixed up the info, the part about the H.O. mods & C5OF-J probably does not apply to this carb. However, there is a reference to a conversion from C5ZF-D. I have no idea what Pony is referring too? Also it appears that the choke heat supply will need to be modified? And what about with the choke clean air tube? I'm not familiar with that item at all.Why not call Pony and ask them?

You could always convert it to an electric choke cap & eliminate the choke tubes.

In my opinion, this is the most user friendly carb that ford ever offered and more tham suitable for a street engine. In Ted's dyno test, he found that the orginal 4100 offered in 1957 was the best performer of the three offered.
