A gentleman by the name of John Wilson from Alabama was one of the collectors who acquired a bunch of Smokeys "Y" Block goodies when the auction happened.

He ocassionally sells on eBay as Snowbird312.He is one hell of a machinest.He has been building the fluid filled dampners for the Y engines.Also makes some pretty wild looking dual quad air cleaner assemblys.

He has sold some of the stuff off over the years.I was lucky enough to get a N.O.S. blower cam from him.

I was in his garage at Daytona ,while he was alive. He inside the big building. He had a long line of small roll up doors. Inside each was good size room, filled with that engine family he worked on. I went in the yblock room, was amazed how much stuff was there. Big bins of cams, all marked from 57, most nascar.

  I talked to his relative, after he passed away, she told me ,that they sold the whole room to a collector ?  Seeing how we were on the smokey story. I have often wondered if it's 1 of our guys , that has all that stuff, including the blower pieces.

Getting the fuel to the motor is still the most important thing to do with a blower.  George Chaltin, 57 F Code Skyliner was the NHRA A Stock national champ, he had a big Stewart Warner? fuel pump back by the gas tank pushing.  On my supercharged Mustang, I have a 250 lph in tank pump in addition to an external pump supplied by Pro Charger.  The bigger fuel pumps allowed me to get rid of the FMU, fuel management unit, which was tricky to adjust and if you didn't have it set right, you could run to lean.

Yeah, based on OH.................35 years or so of F codes. Nobody has ever gone faster or quicker than John's Hoosier Hurricane in a relatively original Blown 312 Super Stocker.

What it sounds like to me is that is just vintage Smokey.  Always seemed a little vague about what he did.  Not sure what he may have welded in the blower, but I assume he disabled the boost control system to get the maximum impeller speed from the blower.  Works good for a while, but won't last long.  The drilled out needle seat results in fuel pressure overcoming the float and the carb floods.  Don't ask how I know that.  Getting fuel to the blown Y is the most critical part, the electric pump probably insured that.  Just my opinions.

John - "The Hoosier Hurricane"

Just finished reading the second book in Smokey"s autobiagraphy.

In it he briefly mentions the Ford 57 blower as being a "piece of junk Mc Cullah setup".He says he welded the blower wide open,opened up the needle and seat in the carb (which didnt work) and finally put an electric fuel pump on it.

Then it went like hell!

Any thoughts on technically what his discription means?
