A few weeks back TexasMark needed some felt for the internal part of his distributor rebuild. I work at Boot Barn in Las Vegas and specialize in Cowboy hat cleaning/shaping all day long. In the process I cut down a lot of hats because the customer wants the brim smaller. Anyway if a member here in the group needs some felt to put inside the distributor shaft, just P.M. me and send out a S.A.S.E. ( self addressed stamped envelope) and I'll gladly mail you some for free. Its surplus to us and we just throw it out so just let me know.

The felt in the Loadomatic I redid was a very compacted-appearing tubular plug, that cleaned up well when soaked in solvent. Assuming an original plug went missing, I'm curious how a hat-scrap might be properly formed to fit the hinged oiling fixture (for future reference)?

Felt has been used for centurys to hold oil in machinery for lubrication with a slow release type action, i personally dont think exact shape is critical and who has regularly squirted a drop of oil in their distributor, cant get at it most times!

Don't really know Daniel, but I would think it would work out as good as any other felt. That and the fact its compacted together very tightly I would think it would hold oil better than something loose once it was soaked up. The only other vehicel that I ever delt with that had a felt type oiling sysyten was a 41 Indian Chief motorcycle a good friend of mine had that had the Henderson inline 4 in it. The valve arrangement had the exhaust in the block and intakes overhead, that were oiled by soaking up a large piece of felt and putting it over the rockers and the heat would dispense out the oil.  It had thumb screws on the valve cover so it was easy to take off because you had to do it quite often.

in the meantime, I put some other felt in place in the dist... just folded a piece of scrap into a small ball and wet it with oil, then stuck in place... then applied a few drops more and replaced the dist on the engine...

engine still not quite "right"... got a new vacuum advance and will install it to see if it makes things run smoother...

switched over to working on the window regulator and replacing the fuzzies and felt weatherstripping...

Hey no problem Mark! Always help a fellow Yblocker out. Barry I'm off Sunday and Monday, unfortunitly I'll be home when you there. I live 45 miles southwest of town and have a bunch of fruit trees to plant this weekend so I won't be there. Currently Barry, I don't know of any 57 Ranchero's though. Haven't seen any pop up for quite a while.

Get a old felt boot insole and use a leather punch to make the right size plug. That will work.
