If it burnt a rod journal and got hot enough to bend it, that is a good way to crack them.  Even if it didn't break it was probably going to eventually, so better now than running in your engine.

Well, it was only out a little bit, but needed to be straightened before it could be turned or the pulley end would have been out .030.  This machinist is very good, the best. But he just barely got going and it was in 2 pieces. He had magged it first and it didn't show a crack, but once it was broken you can see it was fractured. I'm glad to have found out now!

So, anyone have a 312 crank they want to sell? Now I definately need one. I can go back to the 292 crank, but would rather have the 312.

Thanks Ted. I feel a little better. One rod journal looks to have spun a bearing, but didn't look like deep gouges. Then the machinist pointed out where it looked like the rods came apart and hit an arm. Its getting cut down to fit a 292 block anyway. The guy is really good. Chuck you must know Gary at Manchester Engine.

I'm up in Rumney, near Plymouth, but my shop/office is about 3 miles north of the speedway off rt 106. Belmont area. Definately like to meet up. I'll be bringing more stuff down to Gary soon. I'll let you know and maybe stop by or something.

Most cranks can be straightened.  Just grinding the crankshaft to the next undersize on the mains will many times fix a crankshaft that’s bent just a small amount.

Anyone near New Hampshire with a usable 312 crank? I delivered my "new" one to the machine shop yesterday and, though its real early to tell, there's a chance its bent... crap... Maybe its still good, but I thought I better start lookin'
