All of the later model Y block powered 4X4's I've seen were manuals.. The first automatic in a production line 4X4 was (if my memory serves me corectly) a 62 or 63 Jeep Wagoneer..

I found something you might be interested in looking at.On the Toronto Ont Canada Kijiji site look at ad #172453885.He has a 56 Ford F150 4wd Napco conversion.Supposed to be extremely rare as these were custom built for a special order.

Ford used C-4's in Broncos and light trucks with four wheel drive so you could used the transfer case from them. You would also have to install a shorter output shaft and tail housing for the transfer case. I once put a complete Bronco four wheel drive under a '72 Ford E-100 van. Lotsa fun...

I was thinking about converting to four wheel drive on my 57 f100.I have a mild 292 and c4 transmission.Does anybody know if I can still use the c4 for a four  wheel drive transfer case?Did any of the later model 4x4s with Ys come with automatics?
