So, if we are going to race here in Finland, we sure do need SFi spec damper for our Y. Is there any? I know Ted did a conversion from some scrub part. How would we get Mummerts new dampers SFi specified. What would that cost? Just an idea... I know I know... a stupid one. Just dreaming about bolt on damper with SFi on it Wink

And how about a flexplate with Y and PG?

We modified one from a scrub for Charlies engine, it was pretty easy I'm sure you would find that to be the most cost effective way to go.  I know you have the ability. BigGrin

Hollow Head, do a search in the technical section, one of the threads has a complete set of drawings for machining a ATI hub. Bill and Reed used the drawings too have one machined for their truck and I have them at a machine shop now, just waiting on the machine operator. ATI will sell you one, big bucks, like $800 US now. Talked with Ted a couple weeks ago and he is working with another company for a more affordable damper. Or if you have one with the scrub hub it can be modified as Tim said. I think that you could take an old Y damper and cut a section of the snout off for the spacer.

I think that you could take an old Y damper and cut a section of the snout off for the spacer.

Jep, we might end up using those scrub parts too BigGrin. We already have the PG, so why not also damper for chevy? We will keep that Y as an engine though....

Every instance where I’ve tested a fluid filled damper versus any other design has had the fluid filled dampers being down on power.  That simply says that fluid filled dampers are not as effective as the other styles.  I also see a much higher incidence of broken cranks in racing engines using fluid filled dampers so that’s reason enough to not use them.

From your list, the Pioneer and Professional Products dampers are good bang for the buck.  These need spacers though if using standard length oil pans and not the marine timing covers.  That minimizes the amount of contact area on the crank snout for the damper which could be a problem if the damper comes loose.

 

Although ATI does make a Y specific damper, they are pricey.  So pricey in fact that I’m looking at another vendor that will make a Y specific damper.  Biggest question right now is the pattern on the front for the pulleys.  The two main options are the small block scrub three bolt and the SBF four bolt.  Pulley selection is definitely better for the scrub pattern so I’m leaning that way unless someone knows of a vendor with a good variety of small block Ford aftermarket pulleys.  Blower applications are still a consideration on the bolt pattern selection.  To get the pricing where I can make it cost effective is an initial order of five.  After that I’m a dealer and can get the price cut on future orders.  I’m already needing three so I’m almost already there.

I haven’t received an offical quote at this point so the price isn’t finalized but the selling price is expected to be less than half of what an ATI damper for the Y costs.    That will still be about twice what it is to retrofit one of the less expensive scrub dampers to the Y though.  Although the hub will be Y specific, the damper shell that’s being discussed is one that is already being made and used for another application.  This may require the timing tab to be bent up to accommodate a 6.500” diameter shell but the TDC mark will be at the correct 108° location in regards to the keyway slot.  A 6.00” hub is also being considered.  This damper will still require accessories that run off of the belts to be spaced forward similar as with the ATI damper simply due to the working part of the damper being 1½” thick.  Although the PRI show in Florida has slowed down the quote process, I expect to know more before Christmas comes around.

That TCI damper looks like a candidate also and pricing still looks very good.  Diameter of the damper is not critical as long as it clears everything around it.  General rule of thumb is to use heavier dampers as the performance levels go up.
