In the this'n'that category there was mention of one of West Oz's greatest YBlock legends, Bob St Lawrence.
A team of guys have been working frantically to get his old car, rejuvenated and running for Bob who is seriously ill.
A video of the first run of the new car is posted on YouTube.

You can also read about the efforts to get the car to track at:

I hope you all enjoy.

Wow! He's certainly still got it. Is there archival footage of his earlier cars and runs? I'd love to see it. Chuck in NH

There was a tribute given to Bob from his friends earlier this week.

I am unable to find anything archived about his achievements other than he has been inducted into the West Aust. Drag Racing Hall of Fame.

I will ask around among my friends to see what I can find out what they have on Bob.

Anecdotally he held the record, until 3 years ago, of having the world's fastest Y Block and was, until taken ill, reported as intending to resurrect his old engine and run it in a higher class - T/F dragster??

I did not have the opportunity to meet Bob but appreciated his efforts from the sidelines as a spectator at the events he competed in. Heady days.

There was considerable written about Bob who unfortunately recently passed away after his battle with cancer. For those of you who have access to the Y Block Magazine there were two great articles written about him by Lindsay Shoemark. They were printed in Volume 9, Issues 1 and 2 of that year (2002)

I would scan them and post them on this site for all to read but am concerned about copyright infringment.

If you can get hold of these two issues it makes great reading and well and truly shows the character of Bob.

I do have some other excerpts (scanned from Australian publications of the '70's) which make good reading.

If any are interested I could email them to individuals - does this get around the copyright issue?

Thanks for the interest shown in this posting.

Rick

This is Lindsay Shoemark, the author of The World's Fastest Yblock Vol9 issue 1&2 2002

I had the pleasure of speaking with Bob St Lawrence over about a month whilst researching the World's Fastest Yblock

The seed was sown by the enthusiastic story telling by Bob Bucholtz of the rampaging reign of the Saint Train

I have a number of photos from RodSports Magazine and a few from Bob himself

I am planning to pull everything back together (images & story) to submit to the Australian Dragster Magazine

Then we might just straighten out the West Australian archives on who was a legend as far as yblock performance until recently

Would it be possible for you to send a copy of this to Bruce Young at Y-block Magazine? Maybe do a link from here to the article, on line?

Frank,

The "World's Fastest Yblock" series were printed in The Yblock Magazine, Volume 9, Issues 1 and 2 of 2002

The series featured many images of the Saint Train in full flight and words direct from the man himself 'Bob St Lawrence and/or from RodSports magazine of the day..

Somehow with computer changes and such it seems I have lost the story and images combined! But I still have the words and the images seperately.

My aim is to first get them back together, then see what can be done electronically on the web. I believe Bruce Young has very basic computer facilities and it would not be likely that it could be made available from YBM. Still, I will ask

Lindsay Shoemark (the Ybloke)

The more stuff like this comes up, the more I think we need a historical section. Before the guys who were there.........aren't. In the US, guys like Feistritzer and Gordon Payne are absolute treasure troves of this info. I am also amazed at the number of Ausie folks who were involved. Much of the history will get lost if we don't document it. Maybe start off with a list of the people who raced or built Y's and go from there.
