My brake drums are really stuck...was trying to pound with rubber mallet...no luck. I peeked behind the backing plate and didn't see how/where to adjust the pads? Can someone run me through the process of backing the pads off so I can get the drums off? Thanks!

Nate: Near the bottom of the backing plates are small oblong plugs, probably rubber. If they are missing, there is an oblong hole about 1/4" high by about 3/4" long. When you pull the plugs out, you should be able go shine a light in and see a "star wheel". Turning this wheel adjusts the brakes. They make a "spoon" for adjusting them, but in your case a good sized flat screwdriver will probably work. Stick the blade in the slot to engage the notches of the star wheel, and pull down on the screwdriver blade to loosen the brakes. That adjusting screw if very possibly rusted and stuck, I'm sorry to say. If so maybe an overnight soak with a good penetrating oil will help.

Try john's method first, if they are frozen a chisel, or drill with a few different bits can be used to remove the head of the shoe hold-down pins off(backing plate, about 3 and 9 o'clock position), alowing the shoes to fall in-ward and as long as the drum is free from the hub wolla!

Thanks Guys! I saw that plug...but didn't realize that was the "secret" door to adjust the pads. Can't wait to get in there and see if I can actually adjust them.

Nate Also check for star washers on outside of drum over the lug studs. If the drum was never off (30,000 miles) they may still be there. Factory installed to hold drums on. Pete

Nate: This is elementary, but did you remember to release the handbrake?
