Jeff keep in mind too the shorter the muffler the louder it is, and long is slightly quieter. Also make sure they are both going the same way. What I mean is to have both mufflers with their baffles on this inside pointed the same way so that on is not louder than the other, sounding equal.

Thanks guys, exactly the info I was looking for. I hadn't considered the reverse flow design with the stock muffler, but it makes perfect sense.

I have 22" installed on my bird. I put them where the original muffers were so my space was limited to 22" max. Sweet sound.

Jeff: the length of the original mufflers isn't really relevant as they were reverse flow design. Some models also had resonators from the factory. I've also heard that the current Smitties are made overseas and may be of questionable quality. But check that out.. In the interests of not pi__ing off your neighbours, best go with the longest that will fit.

They all are appropriate. It all depends on how loud you want it.

I need to have some exhaust work done on my '57 wagon and would like to install some Smithy mufflers. My question is since they come in three different lengths, 22, 26 and 30 what is appropriate length to use? What was the length of the stock muffler?

Thanks

Jeff
