I cut the head off a bolt and installed it and kept cutting it down until I have about 1" of free play and then hold on this thing is stopping. Works great now all I have to do is tap the pedal and it stops. The original TBird rod is the longer of the 2 .I used it.

You got two rods - lengthen one of them.

Earl:

A spot of grease will hold the nut in place while you are installing the master cylinder.

A lot of free travel bothers me. And mine is beginning to bother me a lot. I will try the nut. Thanks

Earl:

I have been known to put a spacer inside the piston to decrease free travel, such as a #10 nut or a steel bering ball of about 5/16 or 3/8 size.  It's trial and error, but 2" free travel would probably require more than a #10 nut.  I am uncomfortable with a lot of free travel, but if it doesn't bother you, leave it that way.

Just put discs on my bird. Using a 78 Granada m/c and the TBird piston rod. I have about 2 inches of free play and the pedal travel stops about midway and brakes grab. Was just wondering if I should change to a longer rod. Is it a danger to have that much travel before stopping? Other than my satisfaction anyway. The rod that came with the m/c is the same length as the bird  original.
