I am freashening the gaskets on my 301 in my red 63. Rope seal leaks, etc. I want to update the top end & am looking at two choices, but can't make up my mind.
1: build ECZ-G heads sitting on bench with Mummert 1.94 & 1.60 valves also sitting on bench. Guides, seats as needed, milling at least .020, & re using my current Isky springs at proper height. Put adj. Double roller on & dial in my E-4 cam around 4 degrees advanced. (104?)
OR
2: Supercharge it.
2a: valve job & new valve seals & re-use C1TE's. Buy pro charger, make brackets use holley blow through carb.
2b: Use my newly aquired 471 heads with My Mummert valves, re-use Isky springs, buy pro charger make brackets, use a blow through holley.
Help!

If you supercharge, use the 471 heads. Better flowing combustion chamber. If you have your C1TEs off, compare the chambers in the two heads, and at the same time visualize the bigger valves in the C1TEs. I'm sure you can see which to choose. If you don't supercharge, use the G heads for the added compression.

Ok, so how much can I expect to spend on a McCulloch, which one should I use, & how much for re-build? Brackets, I've seen for sale here & elsewhere. How do I go about the additional belt slot on the dampner? Is there any performance benifit to using a McCulloch over a pro-charger, or other? I have only seen a holley or Demon 650 double pumper advertised as a Blow through ready new carb, is this going to be too big? Am I correct to assume that I should leave the cam timing alone if going to a blown application? It is a silent chain that wasn't degreed. If I were to stay Natural, how much performance can I really expect out of G-heads & advanceing the E-4 4 degrees? (the block was Not Zero-decked when rebuilt.)

I'm not going to address the VR series, just the old VS McCulloch/Paxton. The originals had an electric blower pulley that split, giving you two ratios, low and high. Over the years, a variety of means were used to shift from low to high, for low/part throttle, high full throttle low rpm, and low full throttle high rpm, to avoid over boost. They all appeared to be trouble, but some of the Stude guys figured them out. The later model units had a shorter casting, eliminating the pulley split mechanism. They called them SN for short nose. You can get an extended pulley (on a shaft) to allow them to fit original brackets, and still have the belts line up. I've run a couple of these, an SN93 and an SN2000 for several years on a 320cid bored and stroked 292/312 combo with 9:1 compression, in a 55 'bird. Craig Conley at Paradise Wheels bought all the old stuff when the gear drive Novi came out and the Granatelli's (sp?) sold off the old stuff. I like the old units for the nostalgia, but they don't make much boost until 3000rpm, if set for 5lbs at 5000rpm. I had my reasons for the 9:1 and the low boost, but they are a very old design, and not as efficient as a modern unit. Rono in Idaho is doing one of the more modern units, but I haven't heard if it's running yet. Conley may have some old brackets available, or I can send a picture of the one I have (it's not on the car). As a bit of trivia, I don't know if it's true, it was Robert Paxton McCullogh. And they (different division) still build low pressure, high volume industrial blowers.

I think I have decided to hold off on the Supercharger for the time being. Big Money & I am reluctant to make this type of change to an engine with 14 years of hot rodding on it. I am going to bring the G heads to a machine shop as soon as I get the time to port the exhausts & lightly port the intakes. On a side note, I finnaly pulled the 471 heads off the 272 truck motor & wow!! The chamber contour is something I had never seen on a y-block head! I mean those are sexy!

miker, I would like to see a photo of your blower set up - of particular interest would be the bracketry. thanks.... Jessup

Let me see what pic's I can organize. I've got an original McCullogh bracket, and the one we custom built. Drop me a note at miker98038@comcast.net, and I'll email them back to you. I don't think my profile is up and running anymore, Frank.

Mike, You're right. TED, the California and West Coast Profiles are screwed up. I click on Mike and got Rob Bolzon ( the Mad Canadian). Don't think he moved.
