Hey Guys, I know it's short notice but Charlie is going to try and better his record at El Mirage tomorrow (10-26-08) anyone close and interested come on out and cheer him on. He will be trying to bump the 118 record to over 120.

Tim: I've been following the adventures of Charlie Burns' truck with great interest. In the YBM article some time back, it talks about destroking the crank (I'm not conversant with that procedure) and having to use Ch-v-e 6 rods. Assuming one was available, I'm wondering, wouldn't a 54 Merc or 256 truck crank & rods, have gotten the engine down to the displacement limit?

Paul, if I understood Charlie correctly, he used a 239 crank to give him 256. But because his 272 was bored over, it bumped him up a little more.

We used a 239 crank and offset ground it to 2.99" stroke, with a bore of 3.710" that gave us a displacement of 258ci. The GM rods we used were 292 six cylinder type so at least they are not SBC V8 ;-) They are nice and long though, and with a short stroke the engine likes to rev.

By the way, we had some fuel delivery problems today and no run fast enough to top the record.  Next time. Wink

Y-Guys        Sorry to hear the little problems that seem to crop up at

           the wrong time!!!

Charlie, looking at the pictures, does the truck "hook-up"

better on dirt or salt? What's the elevation difference from the

salt to the dirt? At least, you were not so far from home...

Keep us all informed on the next "Frontier"

Ted,  Your comment about the "fun" helped me get things in better perspective....I was really bummed after the fuel regulator failed, thanks.

Tim,  Thanks for the post and pix..........It was tough to swallow the pill and explain the low performance to everyone, this helps.  By the way......my plan is to do another chassis dyno next week to solve the problem and Corene and I have decided to go back to El Mirage November 15th.  I've just got to finish this season on a strong note.........

Bill,  Nice to hear from you, how's Reed?  The salt has much more traction.  The first few runs on the dirt is close to the salt, but by the end of the day with up to 200 runs on the dry lake, a lot of soft spots develop.  These soft spots not only hurt traction, but will also give you a "dear-in-the-headlight" look at top speed trying to keep it in a straight line (I spend a great deal of time on the suspension and alignment).  There were at least two spins Sunday.

Bill,  as for the altitude, Bonneville is just over 4000 ft. El Mirage is just over 3000 ft.  On a hot day in August at Bonneville the adjusted altitude can reach 7500 ft. but can start at 5000 ft. early in the morning for the first few runs.  At El Mirage the adjusted altitude swings from May to November, with a high in July of about 6000 ft.  It is what Don Cyr calls a "horsepower eater"  Maxton is at about 200 ft. and I didn't get an adjusted number, but it was very cool and I doubt if it was higher than 1000 ft. by the end of the day.

Fortunately for me the tiny-y with low compression doesn't require much of a tune change for all of these conditions.  The more exotic stuff out there has the hood up 90% of the time with two or three guys bent over changing jets, timing, computer settings, turbo waste gates, plug gap, retard settings...............Boy, no wonder why I am enjoying this cozy little spot in the classifications.  However, I think Tim and I are cooking up a little change for 2009.

Gidday Charlie, Bill and team from NZ

bummer about the result at El Mirage we have a saying here. "A bad days fishing is still better than a good day at work" i guess if you apply it to racing the end is the same.  Still looks like more fun than sitting in my workshop. Hope you get things sorted in time for your return. Hey how do i get my hands on one of those cool Burns Bros Racing tee shirts looks like a bit of me tell me how much and ill organize a payment. Im glad Bonneville was a few months ago, I wouldnt be able to afford the exchange rate now when we went up to US we got 83cUS for our Kiwi dollar now I would be lucky to get 55c. Great time for you guys to come here for a holiday though you almost double your money.  At least the fuel has dropped big time. Good luck for the next record attempt

Cheers Greg

We think we have the fuel pump problem sorted out and will be at El Mirage for the last meet of the year on Nov. 15, We hope to bump the record a bit. BigGrin

Contact Charlie about the t-shirt, I know he has a few left. If there is enough interest we might make another batch.
