I could find ABSOLUTELY no instructions re: how to release the anti-rattle spring from the bellhousing pivot/bracket. Finally ended up just jerking the fork off, and discovered the orig. dust shield was riveted to it (70 yr. old leather then fell apart). There must be a trick to hooking that spring back on the bracket while sliding the attached bearing onto the snout (?) (doesn’t look easy). Any help would be appreciated.

Hello As I remember there a formed spring like wire that hooks into fork in two places. there is a little tab on Bellhouse bracket that it clips under that hold fork to ball pivot. It is hard to clip retainer under tab even when bellhousing is off engine. Maybe someone will post a pic will be easier to understand.

If I had to guess, the standard procedure likely involves some way of hooking the spring on the bracket tab, while sliding the fork tongs under the installed bearing’s retaining clips (?). Or, maybe a way of inserting the end of the spring into its hole in the fork after the bearing is clipped on (?)

Hope someone comes up with advise, because you probably know what's involved getting bellhousing out of TB. Bellhousing will come out without pulling trans.. Ford had a way to get lifters out of Y-block (in car) BUT you know how that turned out.

Bellhousing issue moot, since the motor is out. Someone out there must have installed a TB clutch fork & TO bearing (?), and still remembers how they did it.

Update: Finally got the clutch fork/T.O. bearing/repro anti-rattle spring & dust shield installed. I understand now why no one responded, as anyone who actually went through the same torturous process likely would just want to forget all about it.

No, though I wish I had throughout the entire engine disassembly/extraction process, as I will have to rely on the exploded parts diagrams & memory for re-assembly/installation. I’m guessing the factory must have utilized some kind of specialized tools/procedures on the motor/trans. assembly line, as hooking that anti-rattle spring on the bellhousing bracket with the rivet-attached dust shield on the fork complicating matters, was a real nightmare, especially while engaging the T.O. bearing hub at the same time (juggling act). Whoever designed the mechanism must have held a grudge against repair mechanics. I believe in future the clutch fork was attached to the bellhousing with a simple hinge pin.
