Thank  you.  I do have the manual and will check for the 9 inches called for in the instructions.  I may have installed the valve incorrectly.

Do You have a shop manual for 56 Ford? reason i ask is there is a specific measurement required when re--installing a control valve. Specific measurement from the centrer of inner Tie rod end stud to center of Stud on Control Valve. If this measurement is incorrect the linkage will NOT return to Center If U do not have Shop manual I will post that Information.

I do.  I'm going to take it off the car and see if the Carpenter kit will work.  It's been a couple of months since I initially began to change the bushings.  I may be doing something wrong.  I'll let you know what happens and thank you.

This is what they should have sent - https://www.dennis-carpenter.com/cars/steering/king-pin-sets/b4a-3352-a-54-59-idler-arm-kit-with-power

You do have the heavy cast frame mounted bracket that the cylinder also attaches to?

Thank you, Kultuz.  I asked the question because I received an idler arm kit from Dennis Carpenter and there's no way the new bushings will fit in the bracket that attaches to the frame.

Here is the confusion -

The IDLER ARM does not return the linkage to center. The arm and bushings are installed (torqued) with the wheels pointed straight ahead to prevent the bushings from being twisted under pressure while driving.

1st ILL - PS
2nd ILL - MS

Can someone school me on the difference between a power steering idler arm and a manual steering idler arm?  I have heard there is some kind of rubber bushing in the PS idler arm that aids in centering after a turn.  Is that correct?
Thanks,
Dean
