I've replaced my vacuum heater valve three time in the last 8  years on my '56 292 y-block Sunliner.  I buy the Dole OEM valve (not cheap) and can only get one or two  years out of them before they begin to weep coolant from the bottom holes.  I thought it might be too high pressure in my cooling system and went to a lower pressure cap.  The last valve I replaced began leaking again today after a little over two years.  These are brand new Dole valves so I don't believe the rubber diaphragm can be aged or brittle for as little as the car is driven.  We usually only drive it less than 2,000 miles per year.  I've rebuilt the vacuum system and really want the heat control to work as original from the dash control or I'd go with a manual shutoff valve.  Any thoughts or similar experience?    Thanks,   Dean Carriveau 

Yours is not an uncommon complaint. Regardless of brand, there can't be many companies manufacturing the HCV. As far as I know, they are made off-shore. I'm eliminating mine and replacing it with a manual valve. Although I bought the manual valve from one of the Thunderbird suppliers (probably Casco), you should be able to get one from your local parts store; they are universal, not vehicle-specific. Some have a plastic housing, some metal. I don't know which is better.

When the last one of mine went south, I put in  a mechanical on/off valve, a kit I got from CASCO designed for a Bird.  Works off the stock heater control.  I was lucky - it went south just as I was pulling into the garage after being out.

Plastic or metal? How long did it last?

The CASCO kit or the original type?  Don't remember on the original type.  The CASCO plastic unit lasted abut 4 years, found the exact replacement on the internet and I've had   now  is about 6 years
