I have a 55-56 272 that is bored to 292. I was told it had about 20k miles on the rebuild and was replaced with a 312 with Tri-power in a 56 T-Bird. The valve covers say ThunderBird V8, but that is a decal and means nothing. It has a 1960 2 barrel intake ( Autolite/Holley not the three bolt flange, no exhaust. It has been in storage for years. It has been taped up and had antifreeze in it until recently. It turns over with a Socket on the crank. I have too many projects to start on this one. This is all the casting numbers I can find INTAKE MANIFOLD C0AE-925-F, 2L5 BLOCK 20 ECG BIFA HEADS Right 1K1- DI6- 8U AND 6090 Left 1K2- BTC- D8.AND 6090 If these head numbers mean anything to anyone please share,as they match nothing I can find i

The 1K1 and 1K2 date codes suggest Oct 1, 1961 and Oct 2, 1961 which would make these heads cast on a Sunday and Monday. The actual casting number for the heads will be found on the outside of the head located under the water passage port where the intake attaches to the heads. You’ll have to look at both ends of a cylinder head to get a complete number which will likely also include the ‘6090’ number. 6090 simply means head casting and will be found on most Ford cylinder heads regardless of engine family. The prefix and suffix around that number is what will be the identifier for those particular heads. I suspect you are going to find a C1AE or C1TE for the prefix. C and D would be common suffixes for 1961-1964 heads.

The ‘2L5’ on the intake manifold suggests a November 5, 1962 casting date which would have been a Monday. While the cylinder heads are reasonably close to each other on the casting dates thus making them a matching pair, the intake manifold is thirteen months newer making it from a different engine than from where the cylinder heads originated. As the engine block is an ECG 272 casting, it’s no newer than 1957 assuming it’s a U.S.A. engine. You did mention it being 1955/1956 so that fits. As a footnote, the 272 engine was used in other countries much later than that. As with many Ford Y engines out there, this engine has been given new life using pieces from different engines. It would be interesting to know the date codes of the block and timing cover just as a matter of reference. If that engine was in a Thunderbird during its life, then the timing cover would be one for a front mount. Most timing covers were date coded but there are some exceptions out there without any date codes. Is there an oil pan included with the engine? The Thunderbird engines had their own specific rear sump oil pans.

you are correct the heads are cast C1TE, It has a front sump and I don't know if it had a front mount on it the front cover lower bolts are not tiht, like something was removered. Anyway it would appear I and maybe thhe person I purchased the engine from were misled about it being in a T-Bird. If nobody is interested in the complete engine, I will put it on a stand and tear it down to find out exactly what I have. I was going to put it in my 57 Del Rio but have decided to leave the 390 in it. I may look for another body but at this time I have a 48 CJ2, 57 Ford Del Rio, 64 Comet, 77 scrubyy C30 apart and I need to finish something. Thank you for your time and the information
