I’m putting my oil pan back with the Tennessee gasket in under the car. I found two issues worth mentioning. The gasket is impossible to install without gluing it to the pan. I used clear silicone sparingly around the outer edge and into the first groove. 

I had an old time mechanic tell me that he once needed to change a Y block distributer and when he pulled the distributer up out of the hole, he heard the metallic tingling sound of the distributer drive shaft tumbling down into the oil pan. He not only was changing the distributer,,but now had to remove the oil pan to retrieve the shaft. Perhaps the clip was added to keep the shaft in place and engaged with the oil pump when pulling the distributer.

Exactly, and ARP put the clip on the wrong end for years. Knowing this, I attempted to remove the clip from the distributor-end of the shaft and move it to the pump end; unfortunately, the clip would not fit. I emailed ARP. explained the problem, and ARP mailed the correct clip, free of charge. 

Good story but, the mechanic wasn’t working a Y-block. It can’t go into the pan, the pump is outside the pan. It might go off to the side, retrieval with a with a telescopic magnet or mechanical fingers.
Regardless I understand the engineers thinking, it’s good to have the clip in place, mine just doesn’t. 

Lay the gasket on the oil pan rails and secure it using a length of thread tied through four holes. When the pan is in place loosely held with a few bolts, simply cut the string and pull them out.
