Hey friends,

This is my first post here, though I’ve been following this forum for some time. I have a ‘55 Mercury wagon with a 292. This past year I bought a second 292 complete with transmission out of another ‘55 Mercury. My transmission in my car was slipping and needed rebuilt, I decided it might be easier to build a second one and swap it in rather than have my car fully disabled during the rebuild. That worked well, and I’ve cured the transmission woes. My engine is all good, but I noticed that with the donor one, I got this shield that is not present on my car. I figure mine must have been removed along the way, but I cannot figure out where it belongs…either I took it off when I got the second engine and just didn’t make a mental note of it, or it was in a box of misc. parts that came with it. I appreciate any help and guidance for where it goes and if it’s important to have in. Thanks guys!

Only in the 56-59 Parts book I find this similar splash shield for the 58:part 6775;

Looks like you have just the far left side that may have been cut off.

Thank you, that is a similar shield for sure.  I didn't check that area up front, I was assuming it was somewhere near the bellhousing/rear of engine.  I'll see if it lines up with anything there.  There are three mounting eyelets, and it doesn't look like it was cut up (though it's a little bent).  The one edge seems too smooth to have been hacked, unless someone did it very carefully.  Thanks for the image, that gives me another clue!

Those were thought to improve cooling but most mechanics left them off after a major engine service. Just like that shield that fits on top of the radiator below the hood.

Y's guys rule!
Looking for McCullouch VS57 brackets and parts. Also looking for 28 Chrysler series 72 parts. And early Hemi parts.

Do you see any I.D. STAMPING on the shield?

EDIT -

I think what you have is a splash shield for the selector/TV linkages @ the main case. Was the donor trans out of a FORD application? Air or water cooled?

Not listed in the MERC MPC, FORD MPC only.

The shape(s) will vary by application -

Interesting…now I’m more confused! 😵‍💫

The donor was also Mercury, not Ford.

I should have written -

... for the TRANS SHIFT selector/TV linkages @ the main case ...

It just keeps road dirt/water from the linkages and bushings at the TRANS.
