I have a 56 Victoria, serial number would indicate a 312. I cannot get the idle to 400-500 and still have the car run decent. So, when the car runs correctly and I move the gear shift into reverse it slams. One mechanic suggested that I have the tranny looked at. A good shop said the tranny is fine, Just idles too fast. I have the PCV line reduced to 3/16 and venting into the air cleaner. I have Holley 4170---is  it too big. I have read some forum's that hint at that. Help=Please. Harold

What is your idle rpm? Stock camshaft?  How many miles on the engine? What ignition system?  L-O-M or ’57 and later model?  Where is the initial ignition timing set at? Have you tried it with the PCV valve disconnected?  Is the distributor vacuum hooked up to the ported or direct vacuum port on the carburetor?

One thing to consider if it is a 56 V8 and has a H4150/4160 retrofit (ECZ-A or ECZ-B intake?), and if AT (FOM), is the carb throttle linkage has to be adjusted with the TV linkage disconnected and once proper curb idle is established adjust the TV linkage from there.

Possibly use a VACUUM GAUGE to determine if any vacuum leaks. Is the DIST USED A LOAD-O-MATIC or 1957/ DUAL ADVANCE?

I am back on this problem of the trans slamming in reverse from idle. It does not do this from a forward gear. I have decided I would like to pull the tranny  without pulling the motor. I know this is not the correct way, but everything regarding the motor is fine.So-is there a step by step procedure for pulling the motor from a 56 Victoria? My ability and knowledge is marginal. Enthusiam is high. Thanks. Harold

It is still slamming when put into reverse?

What is your RPM while in gear (need tach)?

Have you checked the trans mount, u-joints and watched for pinion wrap-up?

You shouldn't have to pull the engine/trans, just the trans.

You need the correct year WSM to do all you want to do (IMO).

I have used them since 1966.

Does it slam the most when you start it cold and the choke is set and backing out of the garage? How is it when the engine is fully warmed up?  Could be that the higher RPM is causing it.r .  Doesn't sound like a trans problem to me.  Otherwise, does the trans work OK ?

The PCV should not be vented into Air Cleaner. Preferred place is the Carburetor if equipped for PCV or spacer Plate under Carb. PCV is supposed to take Fumes from Engie and re-burn through Intake-NOT the Air Cleaner. Hooked up to Air Cleaner is sucking in Air like a big Vacuum leak. Air Cleaner could be hooked up to Oil Fill Cap to introduce filtered Air into Crankcase for a closed PCV System. Likely why it won't Idle properly..
