Hey guys. Got a new clutch in for the 58 F600. Napa etc all show the same pn for a 12" clutch for this all the way down to the F100.

Multiple posts online of guys finding the same thing. The issue is the flywheel isn't drilled for this clutch pressure plate.

The bolt holes to fit it would be rather close to the edge.

From what I can find on Google, all y block flywheels are the same. The bigger trucks as far back as 57 had the 12" clutch behind the y block, later into the 60s it was available in the 600's as well.

Our '58 has a C1TE 62-64 292. So it should have had the 12" clutch.

Does the 12" clutch take some rare, unobtainable flywheel? Or is it the same as everything else, just redrilled?

Refering to a MPC, it looks like a 58 F600 should have an 11" clutch (12" is for F750 and bigger trucks).

A decade ago, when I last needed a stock clutch, it was the same scenario, only 12" available from typical sources, even though it is wrong.  I had to go to a place that specializes in clutches to get a correct clutch.  I want to say Carolina Clutch is where I got it.  Maybe this is the same place.  https://www.carolinaclutch.com/

Thats what I'm finding as well. I did get a call from Ted and we are going back to the 11" Clutch, I think it will work for our set up.

Zoom Performance Products MU72166-1 is the right part number for the 11" Long style with 1 3/8" 10 Spline.

That's what Ted said as well. Interesting I did find a old Ford parts chart for clutches for 57' trucks and it shows a 12" option, but it must be a mis print that has been copied through the parts chain.

I posted this same question in other forums and have yet to get a response from anyone who has pulled a 12" clutch off a Y block.

This is supposedly from a 57 Ford Truck repair manual. I don't have mine with me to check what it says. But this could very well be the single source of the 12" clutch fantasy.

Strange it lists the engine as "ECS".

ECS is a 302 in 57? Way to early to be a SBF 302.

The 3-character code identified the engine series and size/rating. It was replaced in 1959 when FORD went to the more familiar three and four character PN PREFIX ID SYSTEM.

I started a few years ago to break them down but ran out of research materials (WSM mostly).

Here is a brief example -

-1950’s FORD ENGINE IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS –

Beginning in 1952, FORD ENGINEERING began to identify their new engine families - I6 (1952) – LYB (intro 1952) – FYB (intro 1954) with a three/four-character code. These codes were also used as engine component CASTING ID CODES.The first character E identified the ID NUMBER as ENGINE. The second character identified the first model year usage, and the third character identified the exact engine (along with any PN SUFFIX).

EA - 1952
EB - 1954
EC - 1955-1956
ED - 1957-1958
B9AE - 1959

All BLOCKS have 6015 in the block casting number. This is found on all blocks and is FORD's ENGINEERING BASIC PN for an engine block - Example- EDB-6015-E

BLOCK I.D.CODES

CEBY - 256-272 CI  Cast in Canada. Export block. Used in Canada,Australia, South Africa
CECK - 292 CI -  Cast in Canada. Export block. Used in Canada,Australia ect
EAA  - 215 cu. in. I-6  1952-53 Ford OHV six cylinder. Increased to 223in '54.

ETC -

I was looking through my stash of flywheels for an 11 inch for my '56 Bird to replace the lightened one now in the car.  I think shifting would be smoother with a heavier wheel.  Anyway, I found 2 12inich Y Block flywheels.  I don't know how long I've had them or where they care from.

From a '57 to '63 MPC, the only Ford Y that used 12" is B-C-F-N350/700, P350/500, only for '62, I think.  So not too common.  There may be other applications for earlier models or for '64.

The rest are Lincoln (302,332) or diesel or a 292 6cyl, apparently.
