Be sure the vacuum line is hooked to the correct port on the carburetor and not using a vacuum source directly off of the intake manifold.Timing the engine with a timing light? If so, then set the timing with the vacuum advance disconnected to 8-10° BTDC. Then hook up the vacuum advance and while still using the timing light, ensure that the ignition timing is advancing as the rpm’s are slowly increased. If still experiencing problems, then check that the balancer ring on the damper has not slipped thus making the existing timing marks inaccurate.

What combination of distributor and carburetor is installed? They MUST be matched as to year and system. AND the correct vacuum advance must be used. Could also be an issue with vacuum ports in carb.
