There's a used Y-Block on local Facebook. Says its a 312. Casting # ECZ-6015-C. I have not seen it as its 4 Hours away. Is that casting # a 312 for sure or is same # for a 292? Thanks I just looked at John Mummert's Site. ECZ-6015-C is a very common 312 Block but could be 292 if the Rod Casting # is EBU. Or check Crank Flange for the "Dot" but not all 312's have them. Only way to be sure is Rod Casting #. I will have to follow up with Seller.

  

It's my understanding a 312 crank with out the raised dot would be rare. At least the few 312's I've delt with had the raised dot.  Ted could certainly shed light on that. In addition to the the EBU rods, the main bearing caps will also have EBU cast in them if the engine is other than a 312. Good luck with your find.............

I did check. It could be a 292 unless it has the raised dot on Crankshaft. Could still be a 312 without raised Dot. Only way to be sure is casting # on main Caps and Rods. 

  

If a cylinder head has been removed, you can determine the displacement by measuring the cylinder bore. Stock 292 bore 3.75; 312 is 3.800. If either has been bored oversize, you should be able to clean off a piston top and find how much over it is. My block is a 56 ECZ-B, which could be either a 292 or 312. I intend to rebuild the engine, so I pulled a head and measured the bore. My initial measurement was inaccurate, having used a digital caliper. When re-measuring with a telescoping gauge, and then ,measuring the gauge with the caliper, it measured 3.809 The pistons are + .060, so the engine definitely is a 292. There's no way that the pistons could be +.060 312 pistons, and the longer skirts of 292 cast pistons can't be used with the longer stroke 312 crankshaft.

You don't have to check the rods - just the caps - they s/b ECZ for a 312
