I need to figure out how to make sure my parts are good to install after sitting for at least 57 years. They are the starter, power steering pump, water pump, ac compressor, treadle valve master cylinder, the vacuum/fuel pump thingy. There is no carb or distributor and I'm not sure if I am going to look for stock or upgrade. I think I will stick with 6v going with the 6v alternator. Eventually I will be needing help checking out the power window switches and motors and the power seats switches and motors. One step at a time, I know. This is my first car rebuild and I don't have much if any knowledge of how to test things. The multi meter is confusing to me but I can probably get some help with that. Plus electricity hurts.

After 57 years, it would be safe to assume all or most of your parts will need repair or replacement. Since it sounds like you are just starting out, the first thing you should do is buy a shop manual. This is a must. In addition, it would be of great help if you sought out someone local that would be willing to assist you as two heads are better than one. If you ask around at local car clubs and cruises, you may find someone with more experience. 1954 auto electronics were pretty simple. If you have power and a ground, something will happen. It may not be want you want, but you will know what you have.

Excellent advice form Florida_Phil. Going by your description of what you have been finding, I think there's a better chance than not that most these parts are good as far as wear. For the most part, they will need to be taken apart, thoroughly clean out all old dried out lubricant, relubed and assembled. If it moves, pivots or turns it will need attention after a 57 year slumber but totally doable. These parts were made in the day when things were repairable.

Not to nit-pick but you probably have a 6 Volt Generator, not alternator.
Just so you use the right terminology - if you go calling around looking for repair/parts or replacement. If you call it an alternator there's a good chance people will be questioning.

It does have a genny but I was thinking about changing that to a 6v alternator for better charging and lights that help to see.
