After doing some online research I found the SMP-TS4 that fits certain years y-blocks.  Will this fit my 272 y-block?  I was trying to find a cheaper replacement for the B6C-10883-B.

If the new replacement is for '57 and later Y Blocks, it will not screw into the hole the '56 sender came out of without a 3/8 to 1/4 pipe bushing.  But if it is for '57 and later it probably won't have the proper resistance range since the '56 gauge operates on 12 volts and the '57 and later use 6 volts.

Thanks for the info John.  Looks like the sending unit might not be the issue.  Is there a way to check if the gauge is even working?  Is there a way to repair a faulty gauge other than replacing it?  I'm on a tight budget so any money saving measures are a big help.  I know that one side of the gauge is 12v and the other side goes to the sending unit but does it matter which wire goes on what side of the gauge?

A quick of the gauge is to unhook the wire from it and turn on the key.  The gauge should read full scale one way (I forget which way), ground that wire and the gauge should read full scale the opposite way.
