Paul, I don't know how research you've done, but I got most of my information from reading Ford AOD Transmissions by George Reid and I recommend it.  My experience with AODs is limited but apparently there were improvements mad in later production units.  The big issue would be how you plan on using the car and if the upgrades are worth it.
You might call the adapter's manufacturer and see if they have some recommendations.

The quick answer is the the last years of production of the non electronic controlled AOD from a mustang. I think that was 1990 maybe 91. They included improvements to the internals and oiling. The long answer is make sure you want to go that route. I have done this twice and if to build another Y powered car I would go with a C4 and a gear venders . If you’re determined to go the AOD route contact Dan Gilsdorf at Silverfox transmission. Google it (Silverfox Performance Transmission) and do your homework it’s not a cheap conversion and can be a nightmare but also rewarding  .

I used one out of 1990 lincoln town car, using a bendstens adapter. It is not  the electronic AODE. It is a little of adjusting of the
throttle pressure, but it shifts good for me. You will need a pressure guage to set the throttle pressure. But if you like to run 70 mph
its a good option.
