Pulled out of a 56 mercury in a pick and pull. 312. Wish it would have been a 57. Dont know anything about the overdrive trans but I grabbed it also. Last registration was in 1972.  http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/57197cf7-bcb0-4884-9416-8608.jpghttp://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/5cc91c9d-cca8-425d-9b62-4737.jpghttp://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/5c5b35b3-d610-4582-9124-076f.jpg

Great score! Hopefully it's a rebuildable block. Mercs with manual trans and OD came with the Borg Warner T-85 heavy duty trans and OD. If the trans side cover is "D" shaped it's the T-85, if it has a rectangular side cover it's a T-86, a light to medium duty trans that somebody swapped in. The two are interchangeable with little to no modification.

Glad to help. If you find you need parts for the trans Mac Van Pelt likely has 'em. He's also a wealth of knowledge on ancient Ford transmissions.

Great score. The block in my roadster is a 56 Merc. Mummert’s site has a lot of info on the various casting numbers, which should be helpful when tearing it down. A good standard crank is nice. Mine was never ground, not scored, and offset ground went to 340 with Mummert’s stroker kit.

“information center” at the bottom of the page.

Great find!  The T85 R11 was a heavy duty three speed O/D transmission used mostly in trucks, Mercuries and 312 Tbirds.  A fine spline input version was used in early big block cars.  My 55 Tbird came with a T86 R10.  The T86 was a light duty top load transmission.

A cautionary note;  When you get the engine apart. Clean around the main bearing cap areas well, & inspect, before you commit to spending $$ s on the block. There were issues in 1956, particularly in earlier production, with cracked blocks.. Apparently, earlier production manuals specified main bearing torque figures well in excess of those spec'ed for 292s. Why isn't known for sure, but it led to some disasters!..
