How do I tell if a crank is a forged 292 out of a truck? Have one that is supposed to be one but not sure how to ID it. Also any idea of what a turnable one is worth? I have someone localy looking for one and no idea what one is worth.

Here are some pics of the various Y crankshafts.  Observe that the cast crankshafts have eight counterweights each while the steel crankshaft only has six.  In the following picture and from top to bottom:
292 – cast
312 – cast
292 – steel

The crankshafts are also identifiable by examining the front throws of each.

What is the intended use?  The cast crankshafts are plenty strong for upwards of 500 hp with lightweight forged pistons and lightweight rods.  Some of the stroked 312 crankshafts are in engines making ~550-570hp.    Unless you plan on installing a blower or going endurance racing, the cast should work just fine.  Joe-JDC

Thanks Joe, my engine is not the final power it will have, but it sure won't be done at those 500hp
