Good morning, fellow y-blockers. I am in the process of reassembling my 304 ci. Y. During tear down, I noticed some damage to the cam gear and thrust washer. I was wondering if anyone can tell from the photos what might have happened? I have purchased a new timing set, but should I replace the thrust washer as well? Does anyone know where I can get one?

Only he gear and thrust plate are in your pictures.  The washer is #9265 in the drawing Kultulz posted.  Is the worn side of the plate the side that was against the gear?

I think thrust plates and washers are only available used and they must be a matched set so that the thrust can be set correctly.  They can also be made with the right tools.

I have #6265 off of the old cam. Yes, the damaged sides were up against each other in the engine. Is Mummert the only place to get these items?

I wonder if your overflow tubes were crimped shut or eliminated in an effort to pressurize the rocker shafts.  The overflow from the RH rocker assembly lubricates that area of the cam thrust washers.  The overflow from the LH rocker assembly lubes the distributor gear and the bushing in the block.

The rocker tubes were not crimped on this engine.

The only new source I know of. That or NOS and/or TAKE-OFF.

John Mummert has made a reference that be believes there was more than one spacer thickness to arrive @ proper cam end play. You might want to go through his site to find the information.

Just got off the phone with John. He does not have any of these available. Is there anyone out there that has a spacer and washer?
