There is no Oil Slinger on my 292. Is it missing or never there? Is there supposed to be One? Also is there supposed to be a Spacer between the Damper and Crankshaft Gear? I don't remember seeing One when I took it apart.

The slinger was there originally. That would have been the only spacer as the slinger is sandwiched between the damper hub and the lower timing gear. The missing oil slinger was likely just forgotten and left out when the engine was apart. Happens a lot. Always nice if there as it does help to keep some of the oil from the front seal but not a show stopper if left off. If you have the timing cover off for whatever reason, it’s a good time to put the slinger back on.

The Shop Manual shows One in the Illustration but I don't remember seeing One when I took it Apart. I did note at the Time that there was no Slinger.

I looked in the ’57 Shop Manual and the crankshaft oil seal is the only thing I see that might be confused as being a spacer.

The 56 Manual specifically indicates a Spacer is to be installed when assembling Damper and Timing Gears and Chain however it does not show an Oil Slinger in Illustration or mention One in the Instructions. I misread Manual. Reading Instructions for Camshaft Installation. So was the Slinger added in 57 and Spacer deleted? Right now I don't have either. Parts Catalog lists Slinger for 1956 and later. Not listed for 55. Spacer is not listed at all so now I am not sure what is correct. 57 Shop Manual shows the Slinger but not the 56 Shop Manual.

I recently disassembled some virgin Y Blocks. One of my motors was a '55 and the other a '57. Both had oil slingers. There were no other crank spacers in either of these motors. My new motor has a double roller timing chain and I also questioned the use of a slinger. As others have stated, the only purpose of the slinger that I can see is to keep oil away from the front seal. FE's do not have this slinger and they started in 1958. The slinger is wedged between the balancer and the lower timing gear. As I was building my new engine, the slinger was touching the timing cover. You can see this in the photo below. The red stuff in this photo is assembly lube. This caused me some worry at first. When I torqued down the balancer, all was OK. I think you will be fine with or without one.

The 1949/1959 MPC FINAL ISSUE shows a slinger used on the 1956/ Y (B6A 6310-B). Most likely the earlier slinger was dropped from cataloging at some point. I cannot see how you could get away without it, especially on the earlier oil return on the timing chain area. The FE did have a slinger. Mark, your illustrations. Can you ID them for me by sequence? Also, one has an ILL NO. Do the others? The SM was updated quarterly, so there may be variances there.

They are in Order. 55, 56, 57 from Top down. As per Ted I would put One on If I had One available but its not a "Show Stopper" if not there. I can't get One of these locally. No One keeps a stash of Y Block Parts. If Someone wants to send One to Me in Canada I would pay for it.
