Any advise on a transmission swap for a 54 mercury Monterey? My two speed merc-o-matic needs a overdrive or better...so your input is welcome.

It's really a 3 speed if you use "L" to start out. Not knowing your rear gear but most are in the 3.30 range with an automatic. An AOD Ford is probably your best choice, adapters are available. A 65-66 Mustang 8" rear end complete With 2.80 or 3.00 gears is another. It's almost a bolt in. With this option your car will be extremely sluggish starting out in 2nd gear like the Merc-O-Matic does. With the rear end change most install true 3 speed auto transmissions like a C4 which have adapters also.
The speed limit when your car was new was 55 mph in the nation not however how folks drive today. Good luck.

The '56 Crown has Three on the Tree w/3:89 rear end and OVERDRIVE !
A 75 mph, the tach is right on 2000 rpm in OVERDRIVE......love it
Hope the speedometer is correct.
