I bought another 62 for parts (bad rust problems) that had a good running 292 in it with a 4 bbl. I pulled it, cleaned it up & painted it "Universal Engine Red" (Hot Rod Red). I started the swap from the very tired 223 Sunday Am and have the truck drivable again. It has duals made from the truck single manifolds (til I find some Rams Horns or get headers) with 2" pipes and a pair of Cherry Bombs. This is great, I no longer feel like I have to get out and push it down the street! I still need to modify the Holley's fuel inlet so my Louvered chrome air cleaner will fit over it and install the chrome valve covers plus a few other dress up details.

I have also found another 292 that I am going to buy & hot rod to put in the truck with a T-5 at a later date.

Just kind of stoked and had to post about it.

Congrats-post a picture. A sound file would be even better.

Greg,

sounds like a good deal on the 292. Quite an improvement over the 223. Had a guy locally here in Vegas that did the same swap in a 63 stepside. He said the 292 was easier on gas than the 223, especially on longer trips, probably didn't have to work as hard and a lot less gas pedal because of it. Did you have any front mount problems??

My Uni was originally a 292 truck. When I had to install the 223 I cut the front mount off very carefully so welding it back on was easy. I left the marks on the frame so I just clamped it in place, tacked it, and went back & filled it in. My plan has always been to put a Y block back in the truck. I have driven it the last couple of days, WOW what a difference from the tired 223! I will get some pics posted soon, maybe I can find someone to help me with a sound file. It still needs a little carb tuning or maybe even a smaller carb (650 Holley came on the engine) so I am sure I can get it running even better. After a couple days driving it to work is obviously better on fuel than the 223 and I have even put my foot in it a few times. Wink

Now for that T-5 swap! BigGrin

Greg,

I just put a 500 CFM Edelbrock on top of my old 292.  Works like a champ and very easy to tune!  I think it fits the manifold a bit better than the Holley although I could live without the shiny silver finish.

Looks good, basic black! Back in the day (1961) I did a motor in my 57 convertable in black. Had chrome valve covers, fan, air cleaner etc. The chrome really popped against the black. Chuck in NH

Did a little checking, the carb is a Holley 1850 600 CFM, not horribly too big. I may need to throw a kit in it though. This carb was on the engine when I bought it and it ran so I just bolted it right back on. Still fighting an idle issue, otherwise runs pretty good. Maybe I should go through the valve lash too, if one is hanging open a hair correct vacumn will be an issue.
