Got my 292 in my 62 Uni!

I bought another 62 for parts (bad rust problems) that had a good running 292 in it with a 4 bbl. I pulled it, cleaned it up & painted it "Universal Engine Red" (Hot Rod Red). I started the swap from the very tired 223 Sunday Am and have the truck drivable again. It has duals made from the truck single manifolds (til I find some Rams Horns or get headers) with 2" pipes and a pair of Cherry Bombs. This is great, I no longer feel like I have to get out and push it down the street! I still need to modify the Holley's fuel inlet so my Louvered chrome air cleaner will fit over it and install the chrome valve covers plus a few other dress up details.

I have also found another 292 that I am going to buy & hot rod to put in the truck with a T-5 at a later date.

Just kind of stoked and had to post about it.

Congrats-post a picture. A sound file would be even better.

Greg,

sounds like a good deal on the 292. Quite an improvement over the 223. Had a guy locally here in Vegas that did the same swap in a 63 stepside. He said the 292 was easier on gas than the 223, especially on longer trips, probably didn't have to work as hard and a lot less gas pedal because of it. Did you have any front mount problems??

My Uni was originally a 292 truck. When I had to install the 223 I cut the front mount off very carefully so welding it back on was easy. I left the marks on the frame so I just clamped it in place, tacked it, and went back & filled it in. My plan has always been to put a Y block back in the truck. I have driven it the last couple of days, WOW what a difference from the tired 223! I will get some pics posted soon, maybe I can find someone to help me with a sound file. It still needs a little carb tuning or maybe even a smaller carb (650 Holley came on the engine) so I am sure I can get it running even better. After a couple days driving it to work is obviously better on fuel than the 223 and I have even put my foot in it a few times. Wink

Now for that T-5 swap! BigGrin

Greg,

I just put a 500 CFM Edelbrock on top of my old 292.  Works like a champ and very easy to tune!  I think it fits the manifold a bit better than the Holley although I could live without the shiny silver finish.

That looks pretty good on there, bout the size I was thinking should be good.

Looks good, basic black! Back in the day (1961) I did a motor in my 57 convertable in black. Had chrome valve covers, fan, air cleaner etc. The chrome really popped against the black. Chuck in NH

Jeez that looks beautiful. Loving the gold rocker covers.Wow

Did a little checking, the carb is a Holley 1850 600 CFM, not horribly too big. I may need to throw a kit in it though. This carb was on the engine when I bought it and it ran so I just bolted it right back on. Still fighting an idle issue, otherwise runs pretty good. Maybe I should go through the valve lash too, if one is hanging open a hair correct vacumn will be an issue.

Greg,

I can't say I know too much about carburetors.  I drove plenty of folks crazy asking questions when trying to decide what I wanted for mine.  I could have gotten a 600 CFM Edelbrock for about $60 less than my 500 CFM but enough folks convinced me that the 500 CFM was better for my application.  (still not sure why the 500 CFM cost more??)

Here's what I learned: at MAXIMUM output, a 292 Y-Block will only draw about 435 CFM into the engine.  It can't physically hold any more air than that.  Since we never run our old engines that hard it's usually a good bit less.  As such, a 600 CFM or bigger carb will theoretically never even need to open up the secondaries.  It's recommended to have a pad of 50-100 CFM over your max so for a 292, the 500 CFM carburetor is a good fit.  In fact, Edelbrock says it's designed for engines less than 305 cubic inches.  That's not to say that your trusty old Holley won't work, it'll just never really do much duty as a true 4 bbl.

Now I can't say how true all of that is since I've never done any Dyno testing.  That's simply what I was told by the "old heads."    Anyway, it's food for thought, and definitely will stimulate conversation! Smile

Got a couple pics, obviously alot more to do but you can see where I am headed. BigGrin
The firewall isn't actually that rusty, just various forms of yuck, lol. w00t
I figured I would change the carb to a 500 CFM at some point, the 600 came with the engine I'll run it till budget (or a trade) allows a new one.

Greg,

I saw your pics over on the Slick 60s site.  The engine looks real good...That chrome air cleaner will look sharp sitting atop a polished Edelbrock 4 bbl!!  BigGrin  It looks like you've already got a good modern replacement radiator in there.  By the way, if you're looking for an exact fit for your top hose vs. the flex hose, let me know, I can give you NAPA and Carquest part numbers.

Cool, do you have the part number for the lower one too, they are both flex hoses, lol.

Upper hose:

NAPA - 7209

CARQUEST - 20380

Lower Hose:

NAPA - 7135

Thanks AJ.

Now for the bad news, I have been chasing down an exhaust leak on the passenger side. I found it when I tried to tighten the nut on the flange, the crack in it opened up. Sad

Will a car manifold fit on the passenger side of the engine? I already know they don't work on the drivers side because of the clutch linkage (although think if the pipe was made right it could).
By Teros292 - 16 Years Ago
I had a car exhaust manifold in passenger side in my 62 uni, it fits allright, only the pipe flange is in different position than it is in truck manifold. I had also a passenger side manifold on drivers side so that the exhaust pipe vent down on front of the engine. It goes down quite near fuel pump, but I never had problems with it.

When you guys start looking at Carburetors, take a look at the Street Demon By Barry Grant, There is a small one that ought to work on your 292's. Nothing against Edelbrock, evidently they're very good. But I've had very good luck with the Demon's, they don't even leak!w00t

In regards to carburetion, I have the Road Demon Jr. 525 on a 272 and it works very well.  This carb is another Barry Grant offering and performs well and with good fuel economy.  And will still boil the hides if so inclined.
By Greg D - 16 Years Ago
Someone in the Slick 60s group recommended this same carb. I am going to look around and see if I can come up with a good used Holley 390 or a ? 500 first. Truck budget dictates a used carb for now, lol. It's doing OK with the 600 till then.
By YukonCor55 - 16 Years Ago
From what I've seen, the Demon carbs are very good.  If fact, I'm going to install one of the new 2 bbl versions on the 272 in my 55 Ranch Wagon.  It's supposed to be a dead ringer for the Holley Model 94 or Stromberg 98.

Posted on Craigslist looking for a smaller carb. I got a response yesterday, guy has a couple of Holley 450 Economasters, he wants $50 for one. Only issue is they are a spreadbore so I will need an adaptor plate (he thinks he has one of those too though). This could be just the ticket for my stock street driven 292. BigGrin

I picked up some Y block car manifolds (plus an oil pan, timing cover, air cleaner, surge tank, flywheel, bellhousing and a fuel pump with the vacuum line from a 61 Galaxie) today off craigslist. the manifolds are in great shape! Picked up the 450 Holley Economaster carbs too (he gave me 2), I'll throw a kit in one and it will be good. I should be able to modify my phenolic spacer to work with the carb but I may go get a spreadbore adaptor anyway so I don't have to mess with my spacer in case I put another carb on later.
