Oldcarmark.  I think you'd be more comfortable pulling the engine or the engine with transmission attached IF you can have another set of hands available for steering and another set of eyes to watch one side of the engine or engine and transmission as you lift it out.

The same assistance in putting the engine and transmission back in will make it much easier in my experience.  Smile

I plan to get My Buddy, who also has a 56 Sedan like the Red & White One I sold this Summer, to give Me a Hand. Just about done with Prep Work.. Did this about 10 Years ago when I rebuilt the 292 in that Car. Little better Equipment to work with this Time.Got lots of Time to work on this Motor. Long Winter. One of the Things I want to do is clean it up and repaint correct Color. The Canadian Ford had Green Engines. This One was done in the US Ford Red when it was restored. Having trouble getting the correct Green that was used on Canadian Cars. Any Photos I find of Canadian Y Blocks are old Paint that has deteriorated over the Years.

My first car was a 1956 Victoria.  As I remember, I paid $300 for it, a lot of money for a high school kid. I had a number of engines in that car.  Back in the day we used to swap engines around just for fun.  We would buy an old Ford for $100 just for the engine, hose off the engine, paint it and shove it back in on a Saturday.  There was a big oak tree in my parents back yard that we used as a hoist.  My dad was a pretty understanding guy.  Thankfully none us us ended up in the hospital.  A few of us spent some time in jail for street racing, but that was a different story.

I don't think there is any "best" way to do this job.  It depends upon your experience, the tools you have and your comfort level.  There are four long bolts holding the bell housing to the engine.  You should be able to loosen the top bolts with a wrench and the side bolts with a socket and extensions.  You do not need to take them out completely to drop the transmission.  If your car has side engine mounts, you won't have to worry about supporting the back of the engine.  Once you remove the bell housing bolts, cross member, drive shaft, shift linkage, starter, transmission cooling lines and converter nuts, you can drop the tranny down from the bottom.  A manual transmission car is more difficult because you have the throw out bearing and clutch fork to content with.  I once watched a mechanic remove and reinstall an automatic transmission in a 1960 Galaxie without using a jack.  He did it by hand.  That was one strong person.

Thanks. The 2 at the Top are accessible without pulling back Mat. Pretty easy with no Distributor or Linkage in the Way. I would prefer to pull both together and re-install same way. Still thinking about it.

Oldcarmark.  Just 4 . . . Two at the top and two at the bottom.  One on either side at the bottom.
I've only pulled the engine and transmission assembly when bolted together.
Best Wishes,

How many Bolts holding the Engine and Bellhousing together? Shop Manual says something about folding Floormat back and taking out Rubber Plugs to access 2 of the Belhousing Bolts. Are these the 2 at Top of Bellhousing or are there 2 further down that can't be accessed from underneath? Trying to decide if I want to pull both together or split them up. Just about got everything disconnected or removed. If the bellhousing Bolts aren't hard to access I may pull Engine only and then the Transmission. Working on my back under the Car can't see everything clearly looking up. Thanks
