I am in the process of restoring a 1949 Lincoln with the big engine (F8). The rear OD seal where the drive shaft enters is in need of replacement. I have been unable to find one that fits. One of the popular vendors has one that "looks" like it would fit, but is too small. The number in the Chassis Parts book is 8L-7657. Does anyone either have an extra one I can buy or tell me where else I might find one.

If you know the shaft size, the housing Bore ID, and the thickness, your local bearing supply should be able to get you a seal that will work.

Thanks. I may have found a close enough one from Grainger. I guess that's what I get for messing with a car that not that many exist anymore....:-)

The actual Ford # is 8L-7657-A. Extension Housing Seal. Cross reference to SKF /CR Seal is 16817. I got this from the SKF Cross Reference Website. Should be correct if their Website is right.

I went through the same Hell with my '55 Merc. Turns out it's a common seal for various automatics including the Ford FMX so a parts store should have it or have access to it. Also Van Pelt sales has 'em. Google for the phone number and talk to Mac Van Pelt hisself.

I don't know how different the early and later T85 models are but I ended up using one for a C6

Seals are not that difficult. I've used McMaster-Carr and a local bearing supplier (KingBearing) for years. As stated you need the 2 dimensions, inner, outer, and thickness which could vary for your fit. The outer will crush .001-002" and sometimes I do some slight grinding to help them start. A double lip usually available too. 99% are National. Good luck.

Thanks to all. Van Pelt had sent one to me, but I didn't realize at first that the original seal had a "lip" on it to ensure it did not go too far inside the housing. Everything else from a measurement perspective is correct. I thought the one I was sent was too small, but I am satisfied it will work now. The real work is, as Dobie said, getting the OLD one out. You basically have to destroy it.
Thanks to the other references, too. I saw that Lincoln Old Parts had one, but when I called them, they either didn't have the "A" or didn't know what I really needed. They did have the one for the Hydramatic.
Appreciate everyone's help.
