Anyone using a Powermaster mini starter? I bought one the other day because Mummert was out of stock on his starters. They seem to fit okay, but better without the dust seal. Has anyone had any issues with them?

Although I still use the original starter (it's a sound thing) I do NOT use the seal. Back in the day there was no fitment problem with the seal but that's not the case today and I don't miss it.  It can interfere with the machined pilot on the business end of the starter in the bell housing so why risk alignment issues? Just my $.02 worth,    JEFF..........................

I have a mini starter (not the same brand) and do not use the seal.  No problems - the starter had been on the car about 15 years

I am another one that would not want to loose the sound of the original starter, I rebuilt mine 25 years ago and with good cables (heavy gauge) and a 750 CCA battery you could drive the car on the starter, no reason to change what works.

It spins the engine so good that I have no problem with a 30 second crank needed to fill the carb after the winter layup. If I drive the car regularly a 5 second crank gets it started.

Should say it's a 56 so factory 12 volt, I have seen 6 volt cars that crank as good as my 12 volt, they have all been upgraded to large battery cables and high CCA batterys.  The guys using auto store cables designed for 12 volt always have problems as the cables are to light forr a 6 volt car

Installed the mini starter over a year ago. Had to use shims to properly align it.
Have had no problems with it or the shield.
Could be you dust shield is not original.

Up here in the northeast I've found the mini starters to work well but they are sensitive to moisture. After winter storage I've had a couple that would not turn. Upon disassembly I found a lot of water and sludge in them. A clean up fixed it. A local circle track racer said he takes his out in the fall and keeps it in a heated garage for just that reason.

I have a mini starter in my 56 Customline. Haven't really had any trouble with it. When I lived in Maine I didn't take the car out when I knew the weather was bad. In the winter I stored my car in a Car Capsule. Hey Chuck, I don't need that Car Capsule anymore....you want to buy it for up there? Tongue

I put my 56 in my car trailer for the winter parked in storage so I don't think I could use the capsule. I'm have the car out usually from April until late October and its parked outside so a lot more moisture around it. I've had two different ones do this. Now I've always got a spare ready to go should I need it. With the AOD adapter I can only use the high torques. The plate is drilled for them.
