The plate is not threaded to the block. It's stuck to the gasket. Pry it out. You need a new kit anyway.

Got the nut/threaded nipple off. Is the plate threaded on to the block? Went after it a bit, feels really solidly attached. Thanks for all of the help! Brent1955 Thunderbird

charlley[ is spot on take the socket to a machine shop and remove the champher i then use the impact being sure to hold it towards the nut It is an add on, not a cast in feature. Remove that nut to get it off. [/quote]

I've used a chisel more than once to get one of these to turn. They can be super tight with age. Several heat/cool cycles may help or as stated let the machine shop do it.

From the look of the hex nut I think I would leave removing that to the machine shop. Buy a new fitting. Pete

You have to remove that fitting. Given how damaged it is, you will absolutely need a 6 point socket. Sockets are usually chamfered on the inside edge. Since the hex portion of the fitting is so thin, you need to remove that chamfer by grinding it down on a belt sander or some other means that you can ensure that it is reasonably flat and square. That helps to ensure that the socket does not slip off of the hex and actually helps quite a lot even if the fitting is not damaged.
