Darrell I am curious to know  where were You able to find this Information about Canadian built 56's?  My understanding was that Ford either disposed of or never had accurate Information about Cars built prior to the 1960's. I have a Canadian built 56 Sunliner. Thanks

  

As mentioned, the Thunderbird flags or emblems on the front fenders indicated either a 292 or 312 under the hood for the ’56 Fords.  The Y8 emblem denoted a 272 which was the Ford V8.  I don’t recall seeing a ’56 with the I6 emblems but saw several ‘55’s with those.
 
My first ’56 Ford was a 2 door hard top Customline Victoria and it was a six cylinder car with three on the tree.  There were no emblems on the fenders.  The six cylinder engine was already shot when I got it so the first of many engines in that car was a 390 from a ’61 Ford.  It didn’t take long to replace that with a 406 and then a 427.  When I sold the car, it had a tri-power 428 under the hood.  I look back at that now and wonder where I found all the time to make that happen.

You are lucky you didn't have the crossover pipe.  I had dual exhausts on my 56 pickup and I thought it would look better with the cross over pipe. so I pulled the exhaust off the one side and put the cross over pipe on the engine.  The power drop and top speed reduction were noticeable.  I assume it also would affect mileage.  

I hoped my response would have brought some of the oddities out there. If makes for great reading. I did park next to a 56 customline Victoria 5 years ago at a show painted 2 tone blue/white with a 272 and Y8 on the fenders. Nice car and guy.

I had cash in hand, but the car was not even close to being what it stated, again.  When you see welded front frames on both sides, inner fenders changed, bondo everywhere, and multiple coats of bubbly paint, and it was supposed to be "one repaint", it is discouraging.  The engine skipped like it had burned exhaust valves, and the interior--well, the best I can say is there was an interior.  Joe-JDC

I think it was either Ted or Charlie a couple of years ago that said all y-blocks are 312's until you look at them in person.(Or something similar to that). I know that to be true from experience. I drove some six hours to look at a claimed 56 Fairlane with a 312, dual exhausts, red fender birds, and a 4-barrel carb. Of course, when I looked at it, the first thing I saw was the M code on the VIN. Misinformation notwithstanding, the car was a nice car so I bought it anyway.

There were 4 exported 56 crown glass tops, maybe it was one of those.

there was supposed to be a 56 glass top with a 6.i remember hearing about it years ago but who knows.your not going to find a 312 in a canadian 56 ford or meteor.they installed 24 total in both.13 went into wagons 1 in a crown and the rest they dont know.time and weather would there be 2 left.

I never found a 56 64B with a 6 cyl,  but i did find a 55 6 cyl 64B, believed to be the only 6 cyl 55 Glass top ever built. I missed buying it and from what I heard someone from the Crown Vic club bought it and pulled the engine and replaced it with a 292.
I did come across a 56 Parklane station wagon with a 6 cyl, all the paper work since new. At the time I saw it , it was a good original needing only minor work which was being done.  

You never know what oddity might turn up in a barn someday, but no '56 Fairlane or wagon ever left the factory with a 272--at least not in standard US production. It was either a six, the 292, or the 312. So the Y-8 emblem appeared on the front fenders of Customlines and Mainlines, (and, it seems, Couriers)...but the red T-bird-shaped emblem was reserved for V8 Fairlanes and wagons and for Customlines and Mainlines with a 292 or 312. Frankly I wish Fairlanes and wagons could have been ordered with the 2V 272--wish my Squire had it, with a single exhaust, instead of a 292 and the annoying teapot and so much pipe. Of course there would have been that hot #$%&ing crossover pipe to deal with... .
