Just a question : What would be the Qtr mile time for a stock 56 Ford with a 292 engine? Like a 2 door Victoria? Hope it's OK to post here rather than the Racing area, as I think there is more traffic here? Thanks Jim

If you’ll use the “Latest’ toggle at the top of the page, the number of views across of the various sections of the forum will be equal. Assuming the car is four barrel equipped, then I suspect running in the Seventeens would be a best case quarter mile time for a stocker with an automatic. Those of you that have a stocker that have actually run it through the ¼ mile traps can chime in and give us your numbers.

You're dealing with about 200hp, a power robbing automatic and less than ideal gearing and suspension for drag racing. Perhaps to help with perspective, my '88 Firebird is mostly stock, except for cat-back exhaust. Factory 170hp, 255ftlbs, 5 speed, 3590lbs with me in it, still not ideal gearing or suspension but the suspension setup is probably better for the task. So less power but more efficient transmission and probably better suspension. Don't know how the weight compares. My best with that is 16.85 @83mph. This was also with about 150k miles.

..Most of the recollections of guys from the 1960s racing stockers, are based on fanciful figures, much the same as how much Horsepower their street modified engines had..

If you want faster quarter miles, dump the automatic and swap out the rear gears for 3.89s. Back in the day there were quit a few decent running Y Blocks. I had a 56 Ford Victoria with a 312, headers and cam and it ran a lot faster than the 17s. You won't blow off any 427s, but they can be made to run better than most people think.

If I recall correctly, legally stock but supertuned by Les Ritchey's Performance Associates, there were one or two 56 Fords running in Calif that were hitting 95 - 100 mph in the quarter, but unfortunately I don't recall the ET's. One of the drivers was Bob (?) Abella..

To the best of my recolection without trying to find old time slips, back in the early '60's, my '58 Ford stock 292 was running in the 18's with a 2 barrel automatic.

A good running well tuned 312 in a light sedan with the right transmission, gears, driver and tires could run in the low 15s to the high 14s near 95-100 mph in the quarter.
