Been a while since I've posted a sad question but here it is. My speedometer started working intermittently on my trip back from Ohio. It would work fine for a while and then quit. Today I unhooked the cable from the speedometer and took it for a drive. The cable is turning  but a medium grip with fingers will stop it. Pulled the transmission end out and the plastic gear seems to be tight and ok. Is it possible that there is either a break in the inner cable or that the plastic gear is partially rounded off? Life is tough without a lift!

You could test the cable by turning one end or the other with a drill.  If it exhibits the same easy to stop behavior, then it's the cable.

The gear could be stripped where it engages the cable.

Maybe also look through the hole in the tranny to make sure the drive gear has not moved.

You were dead on with this one too. The hole in the speedo gear was rounded out. In fact I tried a new spare I had and it was a little big too. I could hold the cable and turn the gear although it was trying to hold. I squeezed the plastic tip with some needle nose pliers and it worked.

If its original type Cable and Speedo Gear new Ones are available pretty reasonable on Ebay. If You know how many Teeth its pretty easy to find one

  

Its a factory 80's Mustang cable. The gear was from a Mustang specialty shop. Must be Chinese.

Those Cables after 1956 are a better Design. At least there is a retainer clip so the gear won't fall off.
