Strap wrench worked after I sprayed the filter (where it seats against the block) with penetrating fluid.  I was using the new style cheap "socket style filter wrench" but the 3/8 ratchet would stick thru the hole, bottom out against the filter and the socket backs off the filter, causing it to slip,  result....its not deep enough on the filter.

Hastings used to make a spring type of filter tool which slides over the filter body & then bites in as it's turned with a wrench. Not sure if it's available now. If your regular wrench is slipping on the filter body, try a 1" strip of heavy sand paper, doubled & taped inside the wrench, that may work. Punching a hole in the filter is a last resort, because it's messy & may still fail. Now then, you have to tow your car to a shop or ?

You may have to try and bend the end that screws onto Adapter. Try and work a Screwdriver under the End and work it away from the Block as far around as You can. I had the same problem with Mine when I first got it. Filter had been on there for Years. The Screwdriver through the Can may not work as the Can is only thin Metal and tears when You try to turn it.

  

I don't know what kind of tool you are using but I find the strap type to be easier to get leverage with. If you get desperate, drive a long screwdriver through the end of the case for more leverage. Be prepared for oil to spill, though. 

Having trouble getting it off.  Any tricks I should know?  It is a spin on Fram PH8A, if that helps.  Probably hasn't been off in 20 years.  I just got the car, beginning resto.
