hey, just wondering if anyone has fitted a borg warner single rail 4 speed behind a 292? and how they went about it?
i was planning on using c4 but now am leaning towards swapping to manual and running the single rail.
its going in a 1930 ford I'm building at the moment.
thanks Sam

yeah i have thought about it haha thats why I've set it up with a c4 at the moment but really thinking of going to a single rail for some reason, even a top loader if i can find one, from what i can gather i can use a top loader bell and drill it to suit the single rail, but again I'm not 100% sure so hoping someone may know on here

The problem with that is that there is not exactly a top loader bell for a Y-Block. Early top loaders have the 3 speed pattern that will work with a Y bell but I have a feeling the modification requires the 4 speed pattern. A truck 4 speed bell (not the same pattern as a top loader)may be closest but then bell housing depth may become an issue.

I had to look that trans up, and most of what I found indicated it was a little light for the torque of a 292. Can I ask where you're located? I've got 3 pedals in my channeled 32, and it's pretty tight.

If the top loader is an early one, it has the same bolt pattern as a Yblock (narrow top). Question - what is a singe rail trans?
I had a model A with a 302 and a top loader and no problem with 3 pedals. This with the lower part of the firewall modified for the 302.

they were a common trans here in australia, they're a borg warner 4 speed trans and were behind a lot of 302 and maybe even 351's so thought surely would hold up behind a 292 haha

If anything like the T10 and top loader, many of them had dual mounting patterns on the ears, if not either the top or bottom lined up and the others could be drilled. the input shaft bearing retainer needs to be turned slightly and the input shaft snout shortened about 3/8" for car bells. The light duty truck 3 speed bell has the same bolt pattern but not sure of depth, think its same as car. The T98 bells are a no go and only good for the heavy duty T98's, Clark 5 speeds and the heavy duty 3 speed transmission bolt patterns.
