Having a problem with leaking Pan on my Fordomatic. This is on a Transmission I just installed. Not a recent rebuild. I have installed a new Gasket which leaked. My Mechanic who has many Years working on 50's and 60's Cars installed another One today. Its leaking. The Vent is open. Pan Holes  have been tapped flat. It is leaking around Pan edge not somewhere else on Trans. Has anyone had a problem like this? Any suggestions?

Did you use anything on the gasket, also look at the transmission surface make sure its clean doesn't have any cracks, you may want to make sure the pan is flat, check the bolt holes for being to lose or cracks

Did that John. I did One Gasket and my Veteran Mechanic did One. Checked for flatness and tapped down openings. He actually used a sealer with the Gasket as He has done on many Transmission Pan Gaskets. Retorqued bolts after it warmed up.It is definetly coming from Pan-not Seals or extension Housing.

Greetings to all:  Are any of the pan bolt holes bored all the way through extending into the inside of the case? Anything is possible to our 60 year old cars and ATF would have no problem snaking around the threads   Just a thought - hope this helps..........JEFF

Hello Jeff!  Thanks for the suggestion. They are Blind and don't go all the way into Transmission. My Mechanic did say that they don't make Gaskets like they used to. This is true. I think the Ones used back in the Day were much better Material and probably a little thicker too..This Transmission I purchased about 3 Years ago. Supposed to have been rebuilt but never installed. No Paper to back up His claim. Been sitting in his Shed for about 5 Years. It seems to work well. Water Cooled replacing the Air Cooled One I had. I purchased it because mine has been getting worse over the last 3-4  Years not engaging until it was warmed up. Didn't leak though.Hopefully I can get this One to stay Dry.

Greetings: Another possible leak source that may appear to be the pan gasket is the gasket behind the front pump, which seals the front pump to case.  Gasket failure here will weep down and  allow fluid to pass between the bell housing and trans, thus soaking the front of the pan gasket and eventually working it's way around from there, etc..   Just another thought and hope this helps, JEFF......

The trans pan gasket sold by CASCO is rubber and works really well.  The cork gasket sold by Prestige Thunderbird (and possibly other places) is cork and squishes out at the spec'd 10 ft/lbs torque.  CASCO says to put their rubber gaskets on dry.   You may need to file the sheet metal pan sealing area flat, especially around the holes since the prior installations may have cinched the bolts tight and warped the sheet metal.
